Hi ned thanks you so much for theses early samples, look great !!! were you able to ajdust iso during recoding or before ? what about using an M lens with aperture ring ? I suppose it would work. What was the quality you choose to record it ?

Looks fantastic! The SR really seems to help. I passed on Nikon's D90 because of the jello effect. Just sold my D300 to fund the K7, can't wait to get my hands on one. Thanks for the sample.

I've been using Pentax lenses in my movies, with 35mm adapters attanched to regular videocameras. Now i can use my lenses in this k-7...
    FANTASTIC!

Very good test samples! Thanks a lot.
I prefer that look over the artificial, "plastic" look of the Canon 5D mark II.

    Hi Ned

could you post a short video in best resolution 1536x1024 in mjpg format (no editing nor recoding). You can upload it on file-upload.eu there is 100mb space for free.

    Thanks you again

    Thanks for posting this Ned!
Pentaxians are so lucky to have people like you who are so willing to share information with us!
great video.. this really makes me want to break the bank and pre order a K-7 now!!

is there any possibility that full manual controls will be added in video mode?
Also maybe a choice to choose frame rate - 24/30/25??
it would make the k-7 and incredibly versatile video tool.. not that it already isnt a fantastic camera!

    Thanks again Ned

I'm very impressed by the lack of rolling shutter wobble. Handheld at 200mm and almost no distortion? Amazing. In-camera stabilization is a godsend for DSLR cinematography.

I know you can set the aperture before shooting, but I haven't found info about shutter speed control when shooting. Can you shed some light on this?

have a 48 film project this weekend -- to bad i have to do it on a crummy old 5D ... maybe the next one will be on a K7

G'day Ned. The mjpeg looks good. There's thousands of indie filmmakers trying to decide on a DSLR right now. Update the firmware with 24/25p, manual shutter and ISO control and you'll sell truckloads of these things.
  • Henry Harder 2 years ago
I would bet on that, too!

  • Ned Bunnell 2 years ago
First, thanks to all for your comments and questions. Since I really only have weekends to do these tests, and I still have to pay attention to my wife, I will try to respond to individual questions at night this week. But I really do appreciate all the feedback!

Ned, please make a NTSC (720x480, 60i) and PAL SD (720x576, 50i) video mode option in camera. It will be useful for television journalist. Also say your Pentax firmware programmes to make a sound indicator (voicemeters) while shotting. It will be useful for controling sound recording. And if it is possible please make out for phones (for controlling sound) and selector of Auto Gain Control sound (on\off).
And so is very needed a zebra option (for detecting the overlighted areas). And make a live HDMI output for uncompressed video recording to PC in studio.
Then K-7 will be outstanding working instrument!
    Good luck!
  • cmdricker 2 years ago
none of theses are really important. Theses are crucial :

    - shutter speed control
    - manual aperture control
    - manual iso control (please no auto iso !!!)
    - eventually frame rate selection (24/30fps)

I hope Pentax will not forget theses because then they will sell far less camera. Many many people are already complaining, Ned could you help us here ???

I've had a chance to download your footage and I've done a codec evaluation vs the other HDSLRs. You can find it here- dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=172958&page=30 post #299

I was pondering whether I should buy a GH1 or K7, then came Pentax release date mid to end July...I knew I had no choice but buy the GH1. Why? Because I'm taking off July 14th for a big family reunion back in my birth country. Now you tell me why releasing a product like this in the middle of summer is such a great idea?!

Thanks for sharing Ned. If only K7 video mode has manual control over shutter/apperture/iso it will be a great choice for serious dslr cinematographer.
Anyway I'm pretty sure I will get one, my K10 need to be replaced...

  • Philippe Jadin 2 years ago
Thank you for those great samples!

Of course you "have to" provide manual control for everything.

I write "have to" because everyone knows that it's easier to provide manual controls than to implement some real time auto exposure/shutter/iso compensation while filming.

What other companies are doing (force some automation in film mode) is nonsense technically and economically. I'm sure Pentax will understand this.
  • Nuno Barbosa plus 2 years ago
    totally agree here!
If photographers need manual controls for photos why not have manual control over video? It is easy to implement, make everyone happy and sell more units... Movie DSLR have a new great market, i'm buying this new Pentax for the movie alone.
I hope in the final firmware it provides manual controls over ISO and shutter speed also.

    Ned! looking cool..

Please send a loaner K7 to Ikelite so they can design an underwater housing! Better still let Pentax release a housing.

With video and WR lenses, this makes an amazing proposition to underwater photographers and videographers.

Only thing missing is full manual control, still shooting while recording video and a one touch video record from live-view mode. (could be quite annoying selecting video through housing controls)

I really hope to see this camera embraced by the underwater imaging world.

I must say I'll have to pass if there's no manual ISO control or locked shutter speed or a way to lock the ISO from changing during a scene.

Completely amature looking and every other DSLR hybrid has these options. Aperture control is nice for DOF, but still pointless if the ISO and shutter fluctuate beyond your control.

Look at the baseball and orange scenes - both noticeably change iso.

Baseball scene the scene OVER SLOWS down the ISO after he swings the bat - you can see the wall in the background go a shade dark, and really unnecessary for it to do so.

The orange cutting, for some odd reason CONSTANTLY when darker and lighter, which is odd because it's a static shot with the same lighting throughout.

If you can't lock the shutter/ISO it's pointless there's aperture/EV control really - hopefully this is not the case with the final camera/firmware.

Even the most basic under $200 cameras have locked ISO/Shutter/Exposures so it doesn't go bright to dark so fast. The candle clip I can understand, but really seen no reason for the change in the baseball/orange scenes, is the camera confused that easily?

  • Gary Hanna 2 years ago
Not to sound crabby, but I really want issues clarified as I want to like this camera, but the other hybrid DSLRS all had issues with auto gain control making a loud hiss with a mic input into it.

I can clearly hear a loud enough hiss in the candle clip with the Rode mic attached, albeit not as bad as the Mark ii's hiss.

The first shot with the rode mic, the hose covers up most of it, but once the hose stops, you can still hear a hiss underneath the birds. : (

    Please lose the AGC.

I hope a firmware update can be made. I don't expect the world from a DSLR, but to streamline things, it's best just to have no AGC or an option to turn it off at least, and if anything have the camera at least lock the ISO during recording if manual selection isn't possible via firmware.

Hopefully the scan rate/shutter speed is constant too (I know that can't be changed because of hardware design). To me shutter control would be nice, but if not, so long as it's a constant rate, either 1/50th of a second to 1/100th of a second should suffice.

Otherwise the footage is impressive and the camera as a photo tool looks impressive. I love the built in IS feature , so I BADLY want Pentax to nail everything else.

  • Lammy 2 years ago
Yes, thank you for the lovely test Ned.

As with everyone else, I agree if the camera had manual control of the ISO and manual control of the shutter during live view recordings then I'd definitely buy it.
  • Philippe Jadin 2 years ago
I have been lended a K-7 by Pentax France in order to test it.

All I can say is the image quality is superb, very low compression, with almost no artifacts. Built in stabilisation is great also. No full manual controls, but at least you can lock everything. Which works well enough for me curently...

You can see the first results here : vimeo.com/user1553230

If you want something specific to be tested, let me know !
  • J.F. Pinto 1 year ago
Hi Phillipe, I just saw the videos you took with the K-7, and they look as if you had it on manual controls. What do you mean by "at least you can lock everything"? With my camera I can only lock the aperture, but not the shutter speed, having as a result an image that changes constantly.

    Cheers!

    Hi Ned,

Happy to say that I just ordered my K-7 today, after much research. Very excited. I was hoping you might have some insight on the possibility of adding 24P in a firmware update sometime down the line. I'm assuming you know this already, but there is a huge demand for this in the indy filmmaking community, and the addition would probably swing a lot of buyers who are on the fence.

    Thanks,
    Paul
