During Roger and Hayley's engagement shoot I shot about 11 minutes of video on the 5D, in between shooting stills with Katie. The main purpose of the shoot was taking photos but I wanted to test out my new Cinevate DSLR rig.

The rig is not a beauty pageant winner by any means but in terms of functionality and flexibility it's awesome. I can hardly bare to look at the hand-held footage I was shooting prior to getting a rig like this.

Shot on the Canon 5D Mark II. Lenses used: Canon 50mm 1.4, 70-200mm 2.8 and 20mm 2.8 plus a Nikon 50mm 1.4.

Music: Joshua Radin "A Friend Like You"

It seems so. The little HV30 is gathering quite a bit of dust.

Where's the other 10 minutes? (kidding) Thanks for sharing that Matt... I was actually considering that Cinevate rig for my D90... the 5Dmk2 blows the D90 away but I'm hoping Nikon comes out with something to compete with it soon... and I still love the D90. I loved the shots where they walked into focus... so simple yet so cool. Great work once again!
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Thanks heaps Jeff! Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what Nikon comes out with next.

  • Love it! Thanks for sharing Matt. Composition and color are stunning! Do you like the DSLR kit? I sold mine to buy a KS-4 gyro ken-labs.com and have been having great success with that. One of my latest vids I have posted was shot with the gyro, vimeo.com/4361885 .

Thanks Denver! Yeah, I'm happy with the DSLR kit. It's a bit ugly but the job it does is excellent.

I love the simplicity of this. The calmness in the movements has confidence. A very nice style.
The mark II obviously can create some amazing images, but you have shown this.
I just hope Nikon's next release will justify my wait, and then it's goodbye to my adapter.

Very well done Matt. Do you do your grading in FCP or in AE?

    Peace :)
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Thanks! This one was edited and graded in FCP. I used a combination of the in-built 3-way colour correction, plus Magic Bullet Colorista and some custom Magic Bullet Looks filters.

    Matt,

beautiful! how do you like the 5d now that it has manual control? have you gone full 5d yet or do you still use other camcorders?
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Thanks Tracey! To be honest I have hardly shot with any of my other cameras since getting the 5D. Every time I go to use my A1 I succumb to the lure of the 5D :)

This looks beautiful! The lighting is gorgeous and the video itself was simply pleasing.
May I ask why a Canon and Nikon 50mm 1.4?
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Thanks Bryan! The manual control firmware update for the 5D wasn't released at the time I shot this clip. So, I shot a lot of it using the Nikon 50mm 1.4 and a cheap adapter to attach it to the 5D. Hope that helps!
  • Bryan Daniel 2 years ago
Ahh I figured that's what the Nikon lens was for.
I knew that before the manual control firmware update, Nikon lenses were a favorable choice for shooting video on the 5d. I was honestly questionable over the resulting quality and consistency of shooting through a Nikon lens and adapter, but this video really speaks for itself in answering those questions!

Do you have a site or link to some of the photos from this shoot? I would love to see how they turned out!

Great work as usual matt =)

I noticed you had both a canon and nikon 50mm 1.4. You were comparing the two? If so, how do they rank?
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Hey Bryon. Thanks! The main reason I used both lenses was at the time of shooting the 5D didn't have manual control. So, a Nikon lens plus cheap lens adapter was the best way to control the f-stop. For video I prefer the Nikon 50mm 1.4 - it's a lot sharper and the focus ring super smooth and is better suited for video purposes. The focus ring on the Canon 50mm 1.4 is terrible, really tight and not smooth at all. Hope that helps!
  • Byron Quandary plus 2 years ago
That does help! thanx heaps for the info.

So I just got the 5d... and now there is the hoopla about the 7d. ... are you a little miffed about this?
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Sort of ... but not really. I was more annoyed about the two XH-A1 cameras I bought a month before the 5D came out. Plus, I've been able to use the 5D for months now and it's been great. I am saving for a 7D now though :) It'd be great to eliminate the 30p to 25p workarounds for sure!

  • Jakob L 2 years ago
Matt, this video is awesome. The light, the music,...perfect! I read all your comments on lens issues as i am about to buy the 7d and I don't know, which lens I shall buy to start of with. I read that you like the Nikon 50mm 1.4. Can you recommend this one as a good allround lens for dslr video beginners? Which lens would you take with you, lets say for an engagement shoot, if you could only take one and you only want to shoot video?
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
For starting out I'd suggest the 50mm 1.4 as it's only $400 or $500 and it looks great. I'd be hard pressed to leave my 70-200mm 2.8 behind though ... it's amazing and the image stabilisation means you can shoot totally handheld with it and the footage is really solid. But, it's a $2,000+ lens though.

I'd get the 50mm 1.4 and some sort of shoulder rig to support the camera and eliminate shake. I could shoot all day on a 50mm :)

i'm with the rest of the people here. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL VIDEO> great editing. which one of the lens gave you the wide angle? and I'm debating my self also in between to get the 7D or the 5D mark ii.. ?
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
The wide shoots were done using a Canon 20mm 2.8. From everything I've read and seen I'd hold off and get the 7D. Full frame only really matters for really wide shots. Everything else about the 7D seems better, especially the different frame rates. I'm still holding out for a 24p/25p upgrade to the 5D but at the same time I'm saving for a 7D.

My speculation is that canon will bring out something like a 1DS Mark IV which will be full-frame plus all the frame rates you need, and who knows maybe more features. I have no way to confirm this, just an uneducated guess :)

This is the style I'm looking for;) Finally someone has done it! What lens is used from 11 to 16 seconds? I ordered the 7d yesterday with the 50mm 1.8.. Hoping to creating something similar...
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
Hi Kristian. I'm pretty sure the lens I used at that point would have been either the Canon or the Nikon 50mm.
  • Kristian Engelsen plus 2 years ago
Thanks for reply! Could you get this look with a 50mm 1.8? You have some talent man!
  • Matt E plus 2 years ago
No worries! I'm pretty sure I shot this at 1.8 anyway, because 1.4 was a bit too shallow and tough to focus.
  • Kristian Engelsen plus 2 years ago
    awesome

Matt, Beautiful images, some of the best I've seen. How did you work with this sequence in post? There seems to be an organic grain to the out of focus areas--is that added, or just the way the light hit the sensor? Really captivating. You have a great eye for light; and you seem to really capture your subjects naturally at ease. Cheers, keep up the inspiring work!
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Hey Joe! Sorry for the slow reply. It was a while ago but I would have used a combination of Colorista, Magic Bullet Looks and the Final Cut 3-way colour corrector on this clip.
