The Man in the Fog | Bart Meuleman
De man in de mist (The Man in the Fog) is certainly one of the finest stories Maurice Gilliams (1900 - 1982) ever wrote. It is a real gem. In no more than ten pages, a man – Gilliams himself? – tells how one evening he has to go and repair an electricity generating station, somewhere deep in the Campine. But it is a misty night and he loses his way in an eerie forest. Meanwhile his mother is dying.
Director Bart Meuleman’s De man in de mist is an intimate production in which music plays a special role. Saxophonists Bertel Schollaert and Eva Vermeiren (both from the [SIC] saxophone quartet) weave a fine web of sound. It is they who conjure up the mist in which the anguished narrator tells his story.
“An immaculate play. Theatre in search of perfection that is accurate to the millimetre. ***” – Wouter Hillaert in De Standaard, April 2nd2012
“An impressive production. An almost hypnotic experience. Chastening and enchanting!” – Els Van Steenberghe in Knack, April 1st 2012
There will be a lively concert by [SIC] electric immediately after the show on September 22nd.
