More than 25 years ago, Holy Comforter (holycomforter.episcopalatlanta.org), a small Episcopal parish in southeast Atlanta, opened its arms to its neighbors marginalized by poverty, mentall illness, and other disabilities. It not only welcomed these children of God into the life of the parish, but also established the Friendship Center in 1997 to provide meaningful activities and loving, inclusive community during the week. A core feature of the Friendship Center has been its garden and greenhouse, which provides a supportive employment program in horticulture. Its focus is not on what people cannot do, but on the gifts and abilities that they possess. Often those must be discovered, but they are present in every human being, regardless of socio-economic class or health. In the Spring of 2012, Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters (aibtv.com) filmed and aired this video highlighting Holy Comforter's gardeners and telling its story. It is used here with the permission of AIB.
