In this video a pleural effusion above the diaphragm is visible. As the transducer sweeps medially the IVC is visible as well, posterior to the liver and running longitudinally left to right. The IVC can be confused with free intraperitoneal or free thoracic fluid, so it is important to understand the anatomy. One (of many) giveaways is that the hepatic veins drain into the IVC, and even in this brief sweep through the IVC a hepatic vein is visible anteriorly, draining into the IVC.
