An Italian woman is recorded late 30s in the Catholic mental hospital in the Netherlands. She is one of the few migrants at that time in a Dutch psychiatric facility. The treatment methods in psychiatry were still being developed. Immigrant patients received the same treatment as their Dutch fellow patients. The Italian female protagonist is Maria Zangrando - Mazzorana. In a letter to the eldest daughter Maria writes how much she misses her family, she is for three months again fairly quiet and calm.
The letter is half a century later an important theme for her grandchild Nineke Verhoofstad. In this documentary she paints a picture of how it was in psychiatry in the Netherlands at that time. In addition several film footage from the 20s and 30s in southern Netherlands is shown. Italian immigrants tried to fit it in the daily life of the local population. This documentary sketches the problematic loops in a life of a migrant woman and places it in a particular historical perspective.
