I shot a lot at Occupy last year. I started about a week in and kept going back and tried to five a sense of why people were there. This year on the anniversary I went down to see where things stood. What I found was an entrenched police force. There was a kind of normalization of power which felt akin to the airports a year after 9/11. Rather than listen to the grievances of those who doth protest too much, the powers that be clamped down even harder on protest.
What I found today was barricades everywhere and officers leaning on them. I ran into protesters and I the world went on in an effort to ignore the concerns.
I inelegantly smashed together some of the footage I shot today. It's long- 14 minutes, but I think it gives a sense of what it felt like downtown today. Cops cops everywhere but seemingly none to protect and serve.
