This video was shot on September 7th, 2012. The official start of the hunting season in Taiji was on September 1st. This was my first time in Taiji for the dolphin hunts, and I was being trained to return as a Cove Monitor. We went out every day by 5am to watch as the boats fanned out and hunted for dolphins. It was a week of good fortune until this day. The fishermen drove a pod of 20-22 pilot whales and their young into the cove, where they would stay overnight until the buyers came to select the ones slated for captivity. The others would be slaughtered. Three of these beautiful pilot whales were sold - a mama and two babies - and they were held at Dolphin Base in Taiji. Soon after her capture, the mama became very sun-scorched and sick. She held on as long as she could, but in the end, she died.
