Teaching our kids to be themselves is the best way to fight a world where everything tells them to conform. Schools, especially, are battle grounds, where kids who stand out can face severe bullying. As parents, we are tempted to send the same messages of conformity so our kids can avoid the pain but all that accomplishes is making our kids feel ashamed of being themselves. Teach them the opposite - that all we have in this life is ourselves and, as ee cummings once said, "It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are."
