Microfinance institutions have been successful in providing sustainable and appropriate credit products to urban entrepreneurs engaged in trade or services. However, the weekly, bi-weekly or monthly repayment schedules that characterize the vast majority of micro-credit products are inappropriate for smallholder farmers or small agribusinesses. With the majority of the world's poor dependent on agriculture for their income, the importance of agricultural microfinance is hard to overstate. Luis Miguel Ormeno of Root Capital, Roger Frank of i3 Advisors and Anita Campion of AZMJ discuss the challenge of providing scalable and affordable agricultural credit products at the bottom of the pyramid and the exciting initiatives that are currently underway to meet the challenge.
