18. The Lived Experience of Sandwiched Caregiver Famil…
5 months ago
Student presentation from the Institute of Design Rethinking Healthcare research workshop.

This project explores caregiving and long-term planning in households in which a family member cares for both a younger and an older generation: both dependent children and one or more older relatives living with chronic illness. What is day-to-day life like in a ‘sandwiched’ caregiving family? How do caregivers anticipate and plan for the future for older relatives? From such understandings, design opportunities are identified for tools to support the ‘job’ of caregiving and necessary decisions about the future, taking the ‘sandwiched generation’ as extreme users. Initial design principles and design concepts are offered for further development by others concerned with important social challenge.
