Jacco Olivier

Artist Statement

“This work is made up of several paintings which I photograph, rework and photograph again. Most of the time, due to the many layers of paint, the original paintings no longer exist. But I still have the photographs. They reveal the history of the paintings. I zoom in on different aspects of the paintings and combine the different elements with a computer to see where the paintings were going, to reveal the hidden themes and recurring motifs. I make a short story.

For this film I painted around the theme 'hypnopomp' that is the state of consciousness leading out of sleep. My film is an abstract visualization of the feelings and imagery that haunt me in the transitional space between sleep and wakefulness. I am a slow starter— every morning, before I can approach the world worry-free and open-minded, I need to first drain the negative. Only then am I happy and at peace with myself.”
