The Misonix BoneScalpel is a novel ultrasonic osteotome for tissue-selective bone dissection. Its relatively blunt blade travels longitudinally and impacts the bone at an ultrasonic frequency of 22,500 strokes per second causing its disintergration in the cleaving plane. Elastic soft tissue, in contrast, is able to deform and displace temporarliy and unlike rotary sharps the BoneScalpel is free of tissue wrapping or tearing. Most users report that the surgical field is relatively bloodless and clean.

The BoneScalpel has been used extensively for bone removal in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including deformity surgery and less invasive approaches. In addition, it has also been used for bone dissection in the maxillary mandibular, orbital, cranial and suboccipital skull.
