Video from the 2009 Abell Symposium held by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. This June 2, 2009 event brought media leaders from Baltimore, Md. to discuss what happens to local news in urban centers if the dominant newspaper folds. Panelists were: Monty Cook, editor of the Baltimore Sun; Mark Potts, former reporter for the Chicago Tribune, cofounder of washingtonpost.com and media entrepreneur; Jayne Miller, chief investigative reporter, WBAL-TV; John J. Oliver Jr., publisher of the Afro-American; and Timothy A. Franklin, the Louis A. Weil Jr. Endowed Chair at Indiana University School of Journalism and former editor of the Baltimore Sun. The panel was moderated by Merrill Dean Kevin Klose and organized by Abell Professor Sandy Banisky.
