Kenyan Matayo Magalasi was out of work. While looking for a job on the computer of a local non-profit, he read about Alfredo Moser, a Brazilian mechanic who invented a light bulb made out of soda bottles a decade ago.
Magalasi, with no money, began collecting plastic bottles from the garbage and installing them in schools and houses. His goal is to install 10,000 of these electricity-free light bulbs to brighten the slums of Nairobi.
