Wind Quintet Score.
2nd in a series of 15 pieces
The music follows the rhythm of the words of WH Auden's poem "Underneath and Abject Willow". When I was 14, at school one day, I heard Tom Rakewell's Cavatine from Act 1 of Rake's Progress. The impact was unforgettable. Not only the relentless (but still surprising) logic of Stravinsky, but also the almost carnivalesque intelligence of Auden's words. Enough of this! If you're discerning and have the analytical bug you can detect plenty of this formative moment in "Underneath an Abject Willow".
