This was an video created for my Visual Arts Body of Work for Year 12 (Final year of High School in Australia) as part of my HSC (final year exam/project).
Computers start, work, become infected and crash. One Giant Leap, conveys the idea that society, humanity itself, runs like a computer; societies rise and fall, become great and fall greater. All it took was 'One Giant Leap' to launch society into a new era, this era is now dying. American society is becoming dis impowered, the devolution of the all powerful western ideal and the rise of the Asian economy.
It is the three pillars that allow societies to gain power that also cause their demise; economy, the first pillar to be produced in a society is the greatest but the most volatile as can be seen with the recent effects of the GFC, secondly the media the most influential encourages community but also encourages revolution, anger and political depression, finally technology, the last pillar to be produced in society, it is the least obvious, a quiet, inconspicuous trouble maker, it brings together those who seek to oppose society.
Noise is a major element of this artwork, providing the basis and the metaphor for what society has become; what we do, what we see and who we are everyday is just noise, the subject of influence from a thousand sources, we absorb everything we see, become everything we know and if this is the result of the three pillars, which themselves have no control, than what are we other than noise, a bunch of random thoughts, a bunch of random actions? This is modern day society in all its forms, in all its glory, in all it's destruction. For all that will be left once humanity has fallen is silence.
