The existing site is listed as a historic industrial area containing the buildings of an old butchery complex, including a water-tower and an old butcher hall. The demand of the National Heritage was to rebuild the tower in its original state and to integrate the main façade portal of the old hall in front of the planned new shopping mall. The brief requested a prefabricated concrete hall of 46 x 42 x 7m. The interior and all internal finishing were designed according to the “Mercator standard” – as prescribed by the shopping company's chain for all their standardized malls.
The construction company's budget was extremely limited, and after detailed calculation the budget for cladding all elevations was set at 60.000 €. The proposed pattern was based on different stepped elevations in order to break down the basic cube shell. The surface needed for one side was then calculated.
The façade surface was divided into three elevated surfaces. Within the budget constraints the decision was made to use basic metal sheets. After another cost evaluation, it was evaluated that only 20% of the concrete shell could be covered with these metal sheets. In response, the sheets were perforated with holes in different sizes. Furthermore, the metal cutlets from these sheets were used and arranged on the rest of the façade. The use of the holes and the circular ornamental patterns were justified with the company's “Mercator pika*” (*pika = dot in Slovene language) marketing campaign targeted to its faithful customers.
With the remaining budget, the metal chain rope runs around the metal dots. In time, the surface will be covered with green climbing plants.
