Shepard Fairey is a beast,,,but is a fucking sell out
  • masis be.noir 2 years ago
    True...
  • Eleazar Sunglao 2 years ago
I disagree. He worked hard all his life with his art. And now, he's found a new medium and as expanded on it. Just because he was once all "rage against machine" type to polticial contribution, you can obviously see the difference in his work and attitude. Things change. Progress rigth? =)
  • Sydney Sharp 2 years ago
I hear a lot of people say that, and I want to know more about why they think so. Not trying to be a smartass, just genuinely interested in what you have to say.
  • thelukeandrews 2 years ago
    ha! now the secret's out!!!!

btw.. how exactly does an artist "sell out"? By making some money? Fack it's not like he's doing corporate-looking work for evil medical corporations or anything..

If an artist is still free to keep true to their own style (and of course that might evolve), they can put it anywhere and sell it to anyone without "selling out"

So.. how mouch have you made lately with your art? Or are you still a waiter during the day?

that's the man behind "THE Obama" portrait (THE portrait) at work. Respect!
  • Chuck Reno 2 years ago
yeah he knows photoshop! awesome! no one gives the photographer any credit though.
  • fannyd 2 years ago
this is what street art is, by definition. you steal and reinterpret your own way, I have no problem with that. love his work.
  • Nikio 2 years ago
Well, I agree with you Chuck, but we must acknowledge that the original photographer too got some more attention with Fairey's work. The photograph it self is stunning, but it wouldn't get so famous without that.
I was kinda strict about that, but after reading Lawrence Lessing's books, my opinion is softer. Derivate (remixes) works are cool.
  • Scott Ballum 2 years ago
Did you watch the video? That's not photoshop.
  • Andrew David 2 years ago
    I bet he used Illustrator.
  • Eleazar Sunglao 1 year ago
Illustrator is meant to streamline rough edges. Vector art, precisely. I do it for most of my work. But if you have seen his earlier work from around the 90's, majority of it was all stencils, if not, wheat pastes and bootleg stickers. He worked from a Xerox machine and tried to streamline his stuff. Digital artwork, is done through computer. but his fine art pieces? Are done by hand; most of it just act as a guide.

    Another copyright infringement?
  •
  • James Heck 2 years ago
his process is similar to my last art teachers, but he is a sellout, and his messages arent as strong, more a talented craftsman and graphic artist, but not fine art
  • Eleazar Sunglao 1 year ago
Respectfully, I disagree. The way I see it, his work and his mediums of getting by it has upscaled. mainly because he moved up as time moved as well. Everyone who knows him, knows the story behind the Andre the Giant image. It was a play around, cut up stencil from a newspaper that was Xerox'd. Since then, it was stencils, bootleg stickers, wheat pastes, and now digital art. His details are very robust. Of course, he's got a studio in which people help him out with the digital process. But, overall, I don't consider him a sell out. He's very politico and still is to this day. yes, he make a business from his work, but that's part of making a living. Just because Tony Alva was a street skater, turned pro; doesn't make him a sell out. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone know what aerosol matte medium he's using to transfer the paper to canvas, you can see the back of the can at 29 seconds in.

    Any help is appreciated!
  • kyle baker 2 years ago
he paints yellow on a piece of paper and in another shot shortly after that he sprays an adhesive on the stencil so im sure its some sort of wheat paste type mix

So sick of hearing people moan about Shepard, selling out and all this carry on. Get over it and produce some work of your own.

Keep using those aerosol spray paints, my friend!

Wow, watching that makes me want to pick up the spray can again. Very inspiring, especially his use of multi-media, wall paper and scraps of paper etc. definately pushes the stencil boat out. Thanks for the link Mr Renton!
