As a chef I cook for a living and I care about food.
I care about alleviating hunger, particularly in times of crisis and natural disasters. I had a wakeup call when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans – thousands were left without food for over 72 hours. When an earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, I decided to fly down to cook for people who were desperate for nourishment. It was my time to act, but I wanted to offer a sustainable solution.
I created World Central Kitchen to find sustainable solutions to ending food insecurity and malnutrition. There are many people to feed and many plates to fill in a world where food should be accessible to everyone. I believe we can eradicate hunger, we can beat food insecurity, but we need to be smart and innovative, and we need to do it now.
