Again, such intimacy in such a very impersonal place. Great music choice. Very smooth and crisp. Nicely done.

Love the colors. Did you do any color correction?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
Thanks Yuli. AWB or Tungsten setting, colors right out of the camera, but desaturated by approx 20%

Good Job Mike, i enjoyed watching this keep it up !

  • Darin Basile plus 2 years ago
Again, excellent work. How do people react when they see you shooting with a tripod? I always want to do things like this but I'm not sure how to handle the awkwardness of obviously taking shots. Do you say hi to the people, say I'm just shooting random stuff, etc...

    Thanks.
  • I've been practicing a lot with trying to be comfortable shooting people point blank lately myself. After a little while I realize they won't bite... usually, so I've been taking the risk to shoot people. I actually picked my tripod up and started using it like a crane, swooping it in front of strangers, lol. I say you should face your worry and go for it man!
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
haha, I don't know Matthew, I have been in situations where your crane technique would definitely get you hospitalized. But anyway, Darin, the way to do it is being totally relaxed and friendly and unobtrusive. practice.
  • Darin Basile plus 2 years ago
Thanks both. I know it's about honesty, a little connection, and respect, but some things are tough to get once people get overly aware of the camera on them.

Looking forward to more of your work.
  • Lawrence Taylor 2 years ago
I was thinking that watching this, you've got to remember that the 5D looks like any SLR so people might not cotton on the same as they would with a larger HD camera. That said, a healthy respect for your subject matter never goes amiss either. Great vid, truly stunning!
  • Rakesh Erukulla 2 years ago
    completely agree with you Lawrance
  •
  • Bhavik Patel 2 years ago
this is brilliant, really like the quality. this seriously could be used as an ad campaign for the canon!

  •
  • Jonathan Wing plus 2 years ago
I love the candid quality of these shots, and the way you caught people in their own world, with such raw emotions. Great song too.

    Not to mention beautiful images!

thanks guys for all the encouraging comments. this was really fun to shoot, I went there during rush hour, so many people and so many tourist taking flash pictures i went totally unnoticed.

  • Gavin Owens plus 2 years ago
Man, in the right hands that camera is at the centre of some great footage.
Max Roach is the perfect combination with the shots as well.
    Nicely done

  • Jon McKee plus 2 years ago
Great stuff Mike! It's so fun to shoot unnoticed like you did. I think this is what the Mark II does best.

Nice work Mike! How you finding the 5D after the Nikon? I have a 5D2 and my mate has a D90 but he hasn't experimented with the Video side yet.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Andrew. well now after the firmware upgrade, the Canon kicks a@@ of course. but before, I had a chance to try it out, the Nikon was better in terms of control (video). as for video quality, out of the box, the canon is a lot better. I do miss a 720p setting on the Canon since I honestly think shooting 1080p all the time is overkill. the debate about 24p vs 30p is bs in my opinion. It is so easy to slow the canon files down to 24p AND this gives a mild over crank. It is also easy to convert to 24p in post w/o changing the speed. for candid work the smaller Nikon would be better. and for the lensbaby, I find the Nikon also better because of the 1.5 crop factor, the lensbaby is just too fuzzy on the full frame.one more note, the LCD and the magnification function on the canon are better.
  • Andrew Howe plus 2 years ago
Just had one try-out since the firmware. Now realise that the best time to experiment with manual control is probably not in the pitch black of a Newton Faulkner gig :S. Still, got some acceptable shots which were just not possible till I came out of auto. When there is enough noise that the mic isn't gaining up, even the sound was passable. Not got round to editing that footage yet, just watched it back from the HDMI out.

    5DMK2 at it's best.

I'm an advocate of the light weight tripod approach, you have demonstrated it's worth very well.

    Congratulations.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Ron. yup, the only way to go. small and light with a good head on top.
  • Steve Henry 2 years ago
Mike, which small and light tripod with head did you use?

  • Glenn (aka Avene) 2 years ago
Looks great Mike. I only just found out the other day that there are Nikon to Canon adapters available. With that and the firmware upgrade, the 5D2 is more appealing to me now also. But I think I'll still hold out for a Scarlet.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Glenn. Of course. the scarlet will be the camera to get. it just looks like it is going to be another year or more before we will be able to get one.

Flashes does bars like cmos... I don't like that and I don't get why it does that. weird.
And it's crazy how the US flag make this amazing place looking like a comercial center. I never understood why Americain people are soo proud of that flag. Without it, it could look way better.

haha - How can you film everyone without pissing off everyone - haha - good job !!

    colors are nice too.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks positive pictures. it is easy I am invisible ;O) as you can see in the video, people are walking right up to me within inches, they don't register anything

    Hello,

Your work on this project is just amazing!

I am wondering which Programm did you use to compile your movie?

I recently bought a Canon HF200 but I can't find any programm to work on my shots.

The programm provided by Canon ImageMixer does not work with Vista.

    Bye bye :)
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
on pc use pinnacle ultimate (very good and reasonable - about $100)

  • Digmo 2 years ago
Do you think the 500D is capable of anything like this ?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
Digmo, unfortunately no. the 500D is completely useless for video work @ 20fps. you are much better off getting the Nikon D5000 in that price range. Check out my Nikon D90 and D5000 movies on my blog. just scroll down.
  • Digmo 2 years ago
Which is bad news as I bought it last week :( 720p is 30fps though. depressed.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
oh! then don't be depressed, dude. that is great. I wish the 5Dmk2 would have a 720p mode, cuz shooting everything 1080 is overkill
  • Digmo 2 years ago
Thanks Mike, I would be very willing to swap :)
