This is the most amazing art installation I've ever seen come out of the Black Rock Desert. Awesome art, beautiful cinematography. Bravo!

I appreciate the piece you folks wrote- made my day when I read it!

Thanks for the feedback and support.

REALLY Quite amazing!!! I have trouble laying that sort of stuff out with computer program! Must be a real challange to do it freehand in hard dirt!!!
  • Peter Hinson 2 years ago
    Thanks!

What really strikes me is that you can't see anything from the ground. I had no idea what the piece looked like until we were aerial! Jim is good at what he does.

Thanks Peter an engaging look at a person who hopefully get some form of living from this sort of mucking about. I didn't! Concisely recorded.

you say mixed results. what are the pros and contras?
  • Peter Hinson 2 years ago
    pros-
.. small enough to fit a workable rig into your backpack.
.. exceptional video quality in most conditions. (the heat on this shoot did degrade the quality, however)
.. full frame sensor with a range of excellent 35mm lenses.
.. simply amazing as a still camera.
.. priced at a fraction of HD cameras of similar video quality.

    cons-
.. at the time, the camera didn't provide for manual control of aperture or exposure. huge pain for 'on the fly' shooting. Canon has added these features since.
.. smooth live focusing and zooming usually require special attachments.
.. difficult to stabilize because of its weight&form.
.. some time warping at certain shutter speeds.
    .. poor audio support.
.. somewhat lossy compression, rarely visible, but annoying.

    etc.

with practice, I've been achieving much better results. highly recommended whether you shoot still, video, or better yet, both.

Wow, what a great art work and beautiful video!
When you say "some time warping at certain shutter speeds.",
    what exactly do you mean?
    Thanks
    Itai
  • Peter Hinson 2 years ago
    thank you!
I found that some of the footage, specifically higher shutter speed shots, had some time distortion in playback. the pace of Jim's walk would be just a little too fast, just barely noticeable. probably due to a shutter speed that wasn't divisible by 30fps.

  • Wonderful work. Both the installation and the video.

Which lenses used? Did you need/use lens IS?
  • Peter Hinson 2 years ago
    thanks!

three Canon lenses are used in this video:
    24-105mm f4L IS
    TS-E f3.5L
    28-80mm f2.8L

the ground shots were done with the 24-105mm, with the IS on. while it did help (very windy out there), it had a somewhat jerky effect, especially on pans.

in flight, I used a Kenlabs Gyro, a K-6 I believe, with moderate success.

some manner of stabilization is certainly important with this camera, the small form factor and weight make it prone to the shakes.

Art on a uber-macro scale indeed! Nicely documented.

awesome. did you change the speed on some clips?
  • Peter Hinson 2 years ago
    thanks Mike!

nope, all of the clips are at 100%.
the scale of landscape provided the illusion of time warping... I thought I was in slow-mo playback when first reviewing the video, still half-heat stroked.

keep up the good work on your blog!

nice job, must have taken a long time to do, big props to the artist and drawing the circles, can't imagine doing that in the hot sun. nice job on documenting the artist.

Very nice. I stumbled across this while following a link on HDDSLR's. I agree about the mixed reaction to doing video on DSLR. Camcorders have the features only a purpose-built machine has. Sound is a very weak point on DSLR's, though no problem if you are comfortable with the dual-sound system.

Fantastic art work, great concept. Where did you get that music, it is the "Icing on the Cake", it makes the video more surreal, like from another era, like the scratches at the end of the record too.

Sorry, I had to mention that the answer to my question is at the end of the video:
"Music by The Living Voices, 'Welcome', 1964"
    Thank you.

Fucking Fantastic Peter, the more I watch it, the more I love it, I show it to everyone. Of course Jim's art is fantastic, but you did not just document-arise it, you made it artistic and just a pleasure to watch.

Amazing artwork and Cinematography, the Instillation and the filming couldn't have been easy, but it feels so effortless and graceful, cool choice of music too.
