1. 2009 CG Reel
A majority of the work done on this reel was done entirely by me for a number of clients. A couple clips include modeling or lighting by other people.

Can you list the software you're mainly using?
  • Gabe Askew plus 4 months ago
Mainly 3ds Max, Vray, Photoshop, and editing with Sony Vegas. Love Vray... love it.

dude your work is really impressive ..How long you been working with 3d?
  • Gabe Askew plus 4 months ago
professionally for about 6 years, though I started playing with CG animation when I was 15 (27 now).

Beautiful reel! You're lighting is impeccable and the animation is top notch! Congrats.
  • Gabe Askew plus 4 months ago
Thanks, I don't think all the lighting on my reel is as good as it could be. It takes so long to get it right!

Your pages are going nuts right now! Congrats on the beautiful work. I too use 3DS Max quite a lot, but my renders aren't quite like yours.

Nice work! Love the building sequences...is that 3ds w/plugin? Seems like I've seen that technique before on another reel
  • Gabe Askew plus 4 months ago
No plugin, just hand keyed. It's not as crazy as it sounds. I actually just select all the pieces, animate them all at once rotating and animating the visibility. Then I deselect some, offset the keys, deselect some more, offset, etc. etc.. I'm not surprised you've seen stuff like it before. About half of the animations for this year's CG Architect contest had similar animations. The first company to do it was Uniform in the UK. And then uninspired directors asked people like me to replicate it. Do I sound bitter?

Awesome modeling and animation job on the flower. Most of the work looks very polished and definitely professional.

I feel the editing could have been a bit tighter on this. You often transition from an action shot to a still shot that creeps into a pan, and it leaves me feeling like I missed a step and fell flat on my face. I love Animal Collective, but the song may be too annoying for a demo reel, IMO. Also, 3:28 is a bit long, and I think you could cut some of the footage down and make a better shorter reel.

    Great work!

Amazing. It's good enough for 3:28 IMHO.

He's right, it is a bit bloated, and I'm not the best editor. The reel was slapped together in one night so I could show it to a potential client. I ought to rework it.

  • What a beautiful work! So delicate and strong at the same time...You're brilliant! Awesome! And the video of Grizzel bear's leave me with no words... What an excellent artist you're!

This is the best reel I'v seen on vimeo. sound goes perfectly with it and is all perfectly timed - 00.33s awesome.

I just posted on your Grizzly Bear video thread. Should have looked here first to get the answer to my software question. I work in Maya and am glad they finally released Vray for Maya. Been looking forward to using it for quite some time.

I agree...a shorter reel would be a good idea. 2 min is generally the norm, but I think you can get away with it being around 2:30 or so. I like the music with it personally. I don't find it annoying. It's not typical to every other reel out there. I also like the editing. Fast paced and keeps me interested. There were some cuts that didn't work for me, but overall it looks great. Nice job!

Amazing thank for sharing this. The music kind of reminds me of XTC, but I guess it's not them. Who did do the music? That was one of the coolest music videos I've ever seen period. Excellent work thanks!

I can't believe you still work with that company that is nothing more than a black hole of retards. You really need to get out on your own and away from them. You are by far way too talented for people to be riding on your hard work. You know the two morons I'm talking about.

Keep up the great work! Look forward to seeing more clips that you've directed. You should be able to get a commission to direct a clip from some of the more adventurous record labels.

Hi, first of all - Amazing Reel!

Judging by your reel you do a lot of CG Architectural Viz work, but "Two Weeks" seems creatively so different. I have one question?

Which work do you find more interesting personally, CG Viz work or Animation (Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear, type of work)?

    Truly inspiring stuff!

I love doing personal work like this, but I gotta pay the bills.

It's called "Brother Sport" by Animal Collective (off the Merriweather Post Pavilion album) -- One of the best albums this year! (IMO) :)

I also finally confirmed my account (that I apparently signed up for long ago) just to comment on your Grizzly Bear vid earlier today. Just getting around to watch this other video and I'm in awe--maybe much more so than most of the other people on here who seem to be in the "CG biz". So, if you imagine me watching it with mouth-gaping little-kid awe, that would be pretty accurate. I am completely mystified as to the process that goes into all your work, but I'm heading back to school for design next year, so maybe I'll get to learn a little about this on the way!

I saw above that you started "playing" when you were 15, so would you say you're mostly self-taught? And out of curiosity what and where did you study? (I'm still sort of searching for a design program that sounds right for me.)

Again...I can't wait to see more of your work (if you keep posting to vimeo)!
  • Gabe Askew plus 3 months ago
I am largely self-taught. I started giving myself projects when I was in high school which forced me to learn the tools on my own. But I certainly accelerated when I started working professionally.

I've spent a few years at a few colleges (Glendale Community, Santa Ana, CalState Fullerton) but I mostly spent time practicing traditional art in those schools. I always tell people interested in CG that traditional art is crucial.
