This Rough Cut Trailer is the last remaining footage from a documentary, entitled "Lions and Tigers", about Sri Lanka - A country that had been ravaged by a 27-year civil war (1983-2009) and devastating tsunami (2004).
Started in the Summer of 2005, footage was independently filmed over the course of multiple aid relief trips to the country in the timespan of 4 years. The production of the documentary was plagued by delays in editing due to controversial images and subject matter, donor conflicts and political conflicts. All of this was put to rest when the footage was unfortunately stolen, abruptly ending production.
It was a huge learning experience, but perhaps a fitting end as the civil war in Sri Lanka ended in 2009, fulfilling the initial purpose of the documentary, which was to focus on the civil war and rally for peace in the country.
The footage is a reminder (relevant today with conflicts throughout the Middle East) about the dynamics during periods of war between governments, rebel groups, terrorist organizations (and their breakaway factions) and the innocent civilians caught in the middle. But more powerful than any of these images of war, poverty and violence is the real-world result of an end to the Sri Lankan Civil War.
While rebuilding Sri Lanka is still an ongoing process, may all the country and its people serve as a reminder of all that can be achieved by a country as war-entrenched as Sri Lanka was, and this video be a small memorial to those who suffered through the civil war.
