Artisanal and small scale mining is often an informal activity. If it remains small scale, the environmental damage can be contained. When gold rushes lead to large numbers of miners, followed by poachers and other criminal actors, problems begin. Kirsten Hund, is senior mining specialist at the World Bank, and co-director of the Artisanal and Small Scale mining in Protected Areas and Critical Ecosystems (ASM-PACE) project, supported by WWF, Estelle Levin, the Tiffany Foundation and PROFOR. She was formerly regional extractive industries coordinator for WWF - Central Africa, based in Gabon.
