20. Hands on with the Canon EF 1200 f5.6L Lens
2 years ago
Hands on review of the Canon EF 1200mm f5.6L Lens for OutdoorPhotoGear.com.

This is one big lens, with a BIG price to match. The lens weighs in at 36.4 lbs, and measures 32.9 inches!

The price you ask? A measly $120,000. No typo there, yes, one hundred and twenty thousand dollars!

Where can you buy this most excellent piece of glass? The used equipment department at B&H Photo Video, where else?

This specific unit is rumored to have arrived at B&H from "some government agency."

Visit wildnaturephoto.com for more wildlife and nature photography review, tips and advice.

All footage shot with a Canon 5D MarkII, and Canon EF 24-105 f4 L, Canon EF 17-40 f4 L and Canon EF 70-200 f4 L lenses.

God I would love to give that a try! I'd like to see more actual footage taken with it.

I live in NYC and have spoken to the lens specialist guys at length about this lens. They love boasting about the government connection and claim that there are 'around 10-15' in existence and each one is tracked by the government. (Supposedly). They said that they are generally owned by federal agencies like the FBI and NASA.

Apparently to check out the range of this monster, they went to the roof of a building in midtown Manhattan and shot across the river at a construction site in Jersey. I shit you not the guy said they took full face portraits of construction workers! Unreal.

1200mm, even on a cropped sensor like the 7D with a 2x extender would amount to about a 110x zoom. I'm guessing they can zoom into the final image and crop a face out, but I don't think the face would fill the frame. Perhaps across "a river" but from Manhattan into New Jersey? Nah...

After watching your footage, I'm thinking that had to be a bold face lie about the construction workers... But still.

    Jared,

In regards to taking the lens to a roof in midtown manhattan, you may be referring to the test that Bryan Carnathan at The Digital Picture did. You can read about it here:
