This is one of several films we produced for UBC Camps International.
Kayaking at Deep Cove is one of the most exciting activities for campers during their two week program. We really wanted to capture the energy of this activity, the kids' sense of discovery and bring the viewer into the frame. For the action shots, I really wanted to be at sea level with the kids to see their faces, see the action up close and share in the experience.
This presented a challenge but ultimately, it meant I had to get into one of the kayaks myself!
There were several messages my client wanted to get across: safety, education, warm supportive instructors, problem solving, facing new challenges in a safe environment, leadership, kids helping one another, togetherness, warmth as well as the beauty of Vancouver.
I am proud to say that we got all of those messages across in this edit and this is something I especially enjoy about commercial work. The challenge is conveying many different ideas in a cohesive, visual story and communicating our messages using narrative, action, emotions and vibe. It is all about density of thought and a concept that we know very well at Picture and Color Media.
