Made with Processing. No audio.

Quite boring, actually. Just showing the wind with none of the other content turned on. The wind moves along the ground paying attention to the slope. It will divert around hills and adjust its direction to flow through valleys. Still some transparency issues to work out but its a pretty interesting first go.

interesting! How did you solve it? using som kind of repulsion off the slopes?

Lovely. Looking forward to seeing it in-place.

I use the slope of the terrain to guide the wind and use a height map to make sure the wind is never at an altitude that is below ground level. If I decrease the speed of the wind to a small amount, it putters along and eventually gathers in depressions so I could probably use the same code to make objects that move on the ground. Like bunnies or giant mechanical spiders.

Nice! I worked on a similar slope problem myself (although not for wind sim) in Lingo for our old Sentinel Islands game: flipcode.com/archives/07-17-2002.shtml

Also, just came across this timelapse video which has some parts which might be a good natural reference for you: vimeo.com/3744985
