22. Porsche: Legend

21. Cut Scenes

The Porsche "Legend" spec spot was created as an experiment in remote collaboration between Monovich (Stephen Fitzgerald) and The Brigade. Located at opposite ends of the United States (Washington and New York states), both parties were connected only by broadband lines and a common interest in creating a spot with beautiful visuals with a strong message that was faithful to the Porsche brand. None of the artists involved at any level ever met face to face. When we needed an additional skillset to round out the piece, we pulled out our address books or web browsers and shot emails, IMs, or phone calls to Oregon, Connecticut, California, Hong Kong, and Poland. In the end the experiment worked out very well, and we are happy with the result both creatively and technically. Although it is not absolutely "perfect", we are proud of what we achieved. With the next round of collaboration we will take what we learned on this spot and push ourselves to a higher standard yet.

All of the shots were done with Lightwave 9, and Comped in After Effects CS3.

p.s. there seems to be a bit of confusion regarding the "Like No Other" slogan, which apparently is used by Sony. For the purposes of this spot, it was actually lifted from a genuine Porsche advert, but for the life of us we cannot find it again to link to it. Que sera, sera.

beautiful even though it's for something as out of touch with the times we live in as a 400 hp car.
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 2 years ago
yeah that wasn't lost on us, but we started when gas was only $1.75 a gallon. We'd like to try a wind power spot soon...

Thanks Gomez. I'm glad real Porsche people dig it. I tried to make sure we didn't pull any gaffes that would upset the home team.

Being that I direct commercials as well I have an extra appreciation for the piece. You guys killed it.

i love the first five seconds. the new model giving a glimpse of an old model is a really clever way to show the design progression and connect your thesis to what we're seeing in the vid. i hope porsche likes it too!
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 2 years ago
Thanks John, I'm glad that came through. You never really know if it makes sense only in your head or if everyone will get it.

Very slick! Would love to know what render method you used for this? Straight non-interpolated MC? Or did you use any of 9.6's caching tools?
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 2 years ago
no caching. some shots were simple backdrop, some were just interpolated AO. the opening shiny shots were all fprime.

Who owns "like no other?" Is it Porsche or SONY?
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 2 years ago
I pulled it from a Porsche campaign somehwere. No idea about sony...
  • antzfx 2 years ago
That is interesting. In India, SONY is using "like no other" for ads of VAIO, BRAVIA...

Really liked your work, Stephen. I envy you!

It is quite glossy, but then again cars are quite glossy. I have a soft spot for shiny stuff.
