hehe, nice 'iso torture test'. The pinball machine looked great. But why'd you have to use the Comic Sans font?! :-)
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
Thanks Abner. That's the font on her business card :O)
  • Abner Pastoll 5 months ago

  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
you are right, I can't see it anymore. changed it. the new file is uploading.
  • Laonei plus 5 months ago
That is absolutely not comic sans...the 'a' gives it away.
  • Abner Pastoll 5 months ago
Wow you changed it from comic sans because of me?! :-D
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
you and two other dudes influenced my decision :-)

very impressed with the High ISO, makes me less scared to go beyond 1200 next time i'm in a low light situation.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
no need to be scared, but I think 3200 is about the max for acceptable quality.
  •
  • Carlos Osterling 5 months ago
That's a pretty cool video... and I love the music you chose for it.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago

Wow its incredible what that camera can do, in the hands of a skilled photographer like yourself of course!

It really is amazing though, I kept thinking about all the lights I would have to set up to get the same look on my current set up.

Its incredible that it was all natural light. I think this piece also says something about the power of lighting subjects with multiple lights from multiple angles with different color temp's. Every rim and edge is alive with highlights of different intensity, color, it really gives your subject's face a lot of depth, interest and subtle nuances of light and shadow.

This is the kind of lighting pro's spend years learning how to do, but now there is a camera that is sensitive that all we need is the right location.

Anyway I'm rambling on here, bravo Mike!

haha, thanks much Adam. there was very little light in there, and you are totally right, it would be a nightmare trying to re-create that light with tungsten's and neon's.

This is another wonderful video from you Mike, your very talented. You should be working for Canon selling 5D Mk II's--your videos show its potential and make us all want to own one.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
thanks Roger :-) you know anyone important at Canon?

Unfortunately I don't know anyone at Canon, but your videos have convinced me to buy a 5D MkII-- the video capability is awesome. I'm curious, what was your set up and lenses used for the Lucy's video?
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
posted all the tech info on my blog: mikekobal.com/blog

I love Lucy's! Have had many interesting and odd conversations with her and her son. The low light capabilities are amazing Love it.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
Yeah, she is fun and very talkative.
  •
  • Jonathan Willoughby 5 months ago
Fantastic work! The flow/edit of the piece is great. My favorite is her playing pinball, how the light flashes on her face bfore you see what she is actually doing. Are you still going to shoot more video on your D90? I gotta say that Canon is super smooth.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
thanks Jonathan. Just shot with the D90 yesterday. It is a shame, I don't need to shoot everything in 1080p. The D90 is small, has a large sensor, Nikon has to wake up and give us a firmware update for manual video control.
  • lawrence 5 months ago
what are your takes on the gh1 thats coming out soon.
  •
  • Bukanza 5 months ago
Thanks for adding the tech info to your blog. However you didn't mention how the camera was mounted. Is it hand-held? Mono/tripod?
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
thanks Bukanza. All from a tripod.

This video is great. I noticed Philip Bloom has a video up to but he uses all sorts of lenses. Was this just right out of the 5D with stock lenses?

Nice mike, you must be a real charming guy. Your subjects are all smiling and seem so relaxed in your videos. Even though I don't drink, Ill def stop by Lucy's if I ever make it to the NYC and order a cranberry juice.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
thanks indyflix, well, p*** off subjects usually don't perform well in front of the camera:O)
  •
  • Lawrence 5 months ago
That's a stunning video Mike! The colour and everything is freakin mental. I have use of a 5D, but haven't had a project worthy just yet... This has given me some great ideas though. I'm gonna swing by your blog now but could you tell me how well the 5D footage responds to being slowed down, and how much, if any post production did you do on this video? Cheers buddy.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
thanks Lawrence. it can be easily converted to 24p or slowed down to that speed. gives a very mild slomo effect. below that it gets choppy.
  • Lawrence 5 months ago
Cheers pal, great blog by the way, very interesting stuff
  •
  • uzilite 5 months ago
this a very nice short piece of one among many individuals who make NYC a very distinct and special place in the world. Even if this was the camera's torture test, you've managed to capture a bit sense of narrative in the video. I can see this extending into a short documentary.
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
    thanks uzilite

  • Harry Garcia 5 months ago
An awesome job Mike!!!! As usual!!! Are we going to see new footage with your D90 any time soon?....or do you think there's no way back?
  • Mike Kobal plus 5 months ago
thanks Harry. yes, I am still planning to use the D90, of course at the moment it does not get much attention ;o)
