Earlier this year I decided to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to make a short fictional film. Equipped with only what I could carry (Hacked Lumix GH2, a few lenses, tripod, hand-held steady rig, slider and a few £5 fluorescent lights from B&Q) I travelled around small villages to find my actors.
My biggest challenge, other than being constantly hounded by insects and dust, was conveying my ideas to the actors - none of whom spoke english. And because I speak neither french nor swahili I had to resort to miming my directions. Thanks to their amazing patience and natural acting talent I think we managed to pull it off.
