A chair enhanced with a performative behaviour automatically emerges from a mysterious cube, or other type of package, into a designed chair – the endproduct. The modulus for this change of shape is a supply of heat, a thermal stimulus which activates the shape-memory effect of the material. This becomes possible by making optimum use of the characteristics of a shape-memory polymer. The possibility of reducing the end-product through a deformation process and temporarily fixing it in this compact form, the packaging. Here in the final shape – the end product – does not exist during shipment! In other words, the packaging and the end-product are one and the same material, the same object. It’s only imprinted in the memory effect of the material properties.
