Whilst in the US recording a new show for Zacuto I took my 5d and the new Zacuto "Tactical Shooter" to the mean streets of Chicago for the "60th Annual Old Town Art Fair".

Last time I shot a short on the 5d was for "Sofia's People" with just one 50mm lens. This time I took a whole bag of lenses to try out some new stuff. Including a Shift Tilt 24mm Canon f3.5, an IS 70-200mm and a few others.

Please read my blog at philipbloom.co.uk/2009/06/18/new-web-series-and-new-short-film-on-canon-5d-mkii-the-art-fair/ for more info.

Ungraded and converted to 25p in Compressor. Full 1080p version available for download.

I would guess that you just ask if you can take their picture, and then they don't realize you're actually filming... although looking at the rig, it might be hard to explaing the microphone.

Absolutely gorgeous, Philip! My jaw dropped when you showed me the footage on the 5D, but I think I teared up a little bit when I saw the final film. Can't wait to see the BTS!

awesome. btw i'd love to know what your current workflow is for 30p --> 24/25p
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
i am still perfecting it in time for my presentation at the UK FPUG next week. Still not found "best" method...converting 30p to 24p/25p is bloody hard!

Hey Philip, Cineform Neoscene. The real deal.
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
    what is Cineform Neoscene?
  • Ron Coker plus 5 months ago
Really!! HDV, AVCHD, or Canon 5DMK2 to Cineform AVI or .MOV files. One click and done.

    cineform.com/neoscene/

    Old dog, new tricks.
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
yes but it doesnt convert 5d 30p to 24p!
  • Ron Coker plus 5 months ago
For what it's worth Philip, the application is able, however not recommended for that task. No problems.
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
    have you tried it Ron?
  • Ron Coker plus 5 months ago
Phil,The information was sent from a well informed IT person, suggesting the app could enhance the 5dmk2 work flow for 24p. I considered installing after upgrading Mac OS in near future. I contacting the IT person a further time for reassurance on the product, finally I decided to contact the product tech support people, they kindly supplied the information as described above.

Is that the Rode Videomic you are using? How did that get on when the IS is switched on? Did you try the Zoom setup Zacuto favour? I have an older H4 but have struggled to find the right adapter. Zacuto's is nice but a luxury for a hobbyist
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
I didn't actually use any of the sound. Also the IS is pretty quiet I found. I have the zoom hot shoe from zacuto. Check out the rapid fire from zacuto, it's the cheapest and the one I recommend.

Besides your work i havent seen alot of good things from the gh1...i just hope it rises to
all the hype thats been buzzing and by the way have you seen zak forsman's model/photographer on youtube and if you have what do you think cause it was shot on a d90.
  • Harry Joaquin 5 months ago
Phil, I came very close to walking out of a store yesterday with a d90, purely because I have a decent Nikon lens kit already, why is this not a good DSLR for video????
  •
  • PV-Bristol 5 months ago
    Hey Philip,
Have you got yr GH1 yet, and by any chance do you know when the actual release date is for the GH1 or if there's anywhere one can be bought in the UK?

    Cheers.

Some really great stuff! How do you think video dslr footage would look alongside 35mm adapter footage? I already own an HVX Letus setup, but I'm thinking about getting a 5d or comparable dSLR to use for lowlight situations/night shoots, Any ideas?

that was very nice as usual. cheeky question but do you think you can get similar results with the dare I say "less expensive" gh1.

Seeing as you are getting your hands on one soon, any chance you can do a side by side comparison of the two? I think alot of people have been yearning for something like this and I think you are one of few that is lucky enough to own both.

    Cheers.

Thanks a lot for sharing your new clip. (I was the person who corresponded with you at midnight by mail) I was inquiring today at Canon Switzerland if the 5d is available but no concrete answer and all dealers say people are waiting for months to get one. Do you have any insider information where to get one in Europe?

going to do a round up tutorial of all the various ways to get 25p/24p with a mac...many ways. All have their positives and negatives...this is my favourite but comes at a cost. Will reveal at FCPUG then online at my site!

Hello, Philip. I've often wondered, when you add masking in post to give it the '2.35:1 look', is it something you've already taken into consideration when you were shooting? i.e do you shoot a little bit further back or anything?

Interesting that this is coming straight out of the cam. Really nice color management. If not confidential would you explain your Picture style setting and fine tuning of saturation and contrast in the cam? Thank you!

I would be curious if you could try NeoScene from Cineform in PC and compare to your other process. I have done a work flow using Vegas, setting playback rate of the footage to 80% (dropping to 24 fps), then, rendering in Cineform codec (through vegas) to 24p. Following that, i drop the new rendered file in, and raise the playback rate 125%, and render to 24p again. I think this is close to what you do in compressor. In fact I would try it on a clip you sent me so you could compare. Chris Barcellos

just awesome, another fantastic philip bloom film!
  •
  • Great stuff...but if I can say I prefered the mood on Sofia´s people...This whole video has a much more uniform pattern on the video shots grading but less breath taking although excellent. The one comment about cineform, I have the sw and it doesn´t conform from 30 to 24... :-((
The image on this clip has a very GH1 ambiance too... You used it before and know the results...
    Thanks for sharing your work.
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
you can one conform if you are in a compatible codec, like pro res which i was in here.
