Just received my Panasonic GH1 yesterday, here is a short test with an old Canon FD 50mm F1.4 manual lens.

Shot at 720p60, convert to Avi with Cineforme Neo Scene and drop in Premiere CS3, 720p24 project.

Great stuff Roland. Love seeing what can be done with the Gh1! Where did you purchase yours from?

I'm in CA and ordered one from Harry's Photo up there in Canada. Supposedly they only had 5 in stock.

Thanks Mike! I purchased mine from Vistek here in Canada.

I just got mine from L.L.Lozeau in Montreal today I was wondering which adapter did you use to put the Canon lense on it?

    Merci!

I bought mine from this guy on Ebay: ciecio7

just do a search with "Canon FD to Panasonic GH1"

Mine is in shipment, I've been living vicariously through other peoples footage for a month now. Let's make sure everybody signs the Firmware Update Petition, so we can get 24Mb data and 24p native in all shooting modes!

I know the feeling Tony, I was living through peoples footage myself. Hope you receive your GH1 soon.

Great quality & DOF! congratulations. One question, during recording, you have SD video output for monitoring? Thanks & cheers

Oh my, no more D90? It seems as if people are leaving it in droves now (as a video medium). :-(.

No more D90 :) As for now I like the GH1... one day I will sold it and buy a better one... I had great time with the D90.

Jan, are you sure, weet je het echt zeker. Technically speaking 5DMrk2 is better. Making a decision on what you see on Vimeo how good their and the posters encoding might be yo are looking at encodings not the raw camera files. have a look at this dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=1660131#post1660131
Canon glass is fine and you could use other glass as well. 5DMrk2 is my Low light hero. Avialable light is a new art form.
  • Tom Poederbach 5 months ago
The 30 fps is solvable, now with a workaround, but soon with an upgrade. 30 fps should be no problem for any web use just for broadcasting in Europe and other PAL areas.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
Thanks Jan! Kholi at dvxuser post an interesting pros and cons list about the GH1 and the 5DMrk2: dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1656311&postcount=15

I dont like the 1080p24 because of the "panning mud" ; dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=172958

I love the 720p60 and hope that panasonic will fix the codec with a firmware upgrade soon :) anyways, every new camera has issues.
  • Jan van der Meer plus 5 months ago
Hello Tom. How does a Canon 5D owner aproach dangerous snakes and turtles? Hang them first in a tree? As (partly) wildlifeshooter I choose GH1 mainly as 2nd cam for watching DOF in all LCD positions. With a heavy Letus to get DOF on a heavy EX3 + heavy tripod and filterbox gear slider etc. moving around in the bush for me is no option. No Landrover for 6 weeks! Also candid filming on streets is much easier with a 'dead' photocamera hanging on your chest! These days we are so lucky to be able to choose the best camera (photo or video) for each different scene. Isn't that nice?
  • Tom Poederbach 5 months ago
How about video spectacles as a viewvinder? Anyway you are right about tbeing able to choose, GH1 footage looks stunning too, but so does 5D2 footage.
Audio on 5D2 can be solved with a Beachtec 5D mixer or with seperate sound as in the old days by using a Tascam field recorder or a Zoom field recorder.
  • Jan van der Meer plus 5 months ago
NOW audio meters on your Canon 5D screen and more see: vimeo.com/5267475 also soon on GH1?
  • This is a quote from a tech explanation to your doubts about formats. The link to the full explanation is at the bottom. Thank you.

Film Format and Sensor Size Comparison
    Hello all,

One of the most frequent questions I’m emailed about is sensor/film format sizes and 35mm depth of field. Actually what seems to happen more often than not, is that I’m informed that I should build a PL adapter for the Canon 5Dmk2, because it has “35mm depth of field, and the GH1 doesn’t.” This is incorrect. I’m going to repeat this….

    THIS IS INCORRECT.

The Canon 5Dmk2 uses a 135 sized sensor which is a 35mm STILL-photo format, the closest equivalent on the motion picture side is VistaVision. This is not the format used predominantly for mainstream motion picture and television production.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 sensor, while smaller than the Canon 5Dmk2, is much closer to the field of view/depth of field used in mainstream film and television. Take a look at this chart I created. All sensors/film formats sizes listed are to scale.

One more thing- the 4/3″ format is not roughly equivalent to 16mm. One could say that 2/3″ HD and 16mm film are similar, but it’s not accurate to also include 4/3. 4/3 is FOUR TIMES the size of 2/3″ HD. (22mm hypotenuse vs 11mm hypotenuse). See the chart below for a visual representation.
Please read the full explanation on the link below

    Hey Roland,

Great work.. I always come to vimeo to check out test videos of new DSLR's and always come across your videos.. Thanks for all the reviews/tests..

Anyway, does the GH1 have similar issues as the D90 when it comes to motion ("jello effect")?

    Regards,
    Christian
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
    Thanks Christian,

There's practically no "jello effect", you really have to move the camera very fast to make it happen.

Hi Roland, As usual great results with the GH1.
Frankly your results are 90% your talent as a videographer/photographer, you simply possess a great eye and have the technical smarts to work around the limitations of the platform you use.I dont know what you do for a living but I do know what you should be doing

best regard to you and your photogenic family

I have to ask (the footage is wonderful by the way) from Toronto here by the way which is the better Camera I've seen that you used the D90 but what do you think of the GH1? Do those two even equal up to the Canon 5D mark 2?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Marco,

I prefer the GH1 over the D90, the 5D is a jewel for low light, but for me the GH1 is perfect.

  • Joe Rawlins plus 3 months ago
Amazing. Does it record in the DVCProHD codec? Is it 24p? That's got to be what's giving it that filmic look. How much footage do you find fits on a card?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Joe,

    Here's all the spec for motion image;

    Motion Jpeg [4:3] QVGA : 320 x 240, 30fps / VGA : 640 x 480, 30fps / Motion Jpeg [16:9] WVGA : 848 x 480, 30fps / Motion Jpeg [HD] 1280 x 720, 30fps / AVCHD NTSC [Full HD] 1920 x 1080, 60i (sensor output is 24fps)(FHD: 17Mbps) / AVCHD NTSC [HD] 1280 x 720, 60p (SH: 17Mbps, H: 13Mbps, L: 9Mbps) / AVCHD PAL [Full HD] 1920 x 1080, 50i (sensor output is 25fps)(FHD: 17Mbps) / AVCHD PAL [HD] 1280 x 720, 50p (SH: 17Mbps, H: 13Mbps, L: 9Mbps)

As an example, a clip of 20 seconds in 1080p24 is 38 MB.

Beautiful work! Are you by any chance using the manfrotto 561 monopod? If not, which? For a one day shoot what sdhc type size and quantity do you take with you? Number of batteries? amazing the continuity you end up with considering the number of discrete shots taken spontaneously!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 month ago
    Thanks Dennis!

I use a Manfrotto 560B, Panasonic Class 6, 4GB cards, I typically have one spare battery and one spare SDHC card with me.
  •
  • Dennis Alvernaz 1 month ago
How do you haul the monopod around? Is it 66" at the least? Do you carry all the equipment by yourself or do you use elves? :). I'm exploring neo scene. I use Mac and its compatible. But I would be alone! Any suggestions or ideas?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 month ago
The monopod is only 26" when collapsed,
    videomaker.com/article/12672/
and I used this Lowpro Flipside 300 to carry lens and accessories.

    Roland,

I hope I am not being a pest with these questions but as a prospective gh1 user, I wonder what you bring with you in your camera bag when you go out for a shoot. I don't mean to be tedious, but I wonder what you consider necessary and how you manage to pack it together for easy use.

    Any comments would be appreciated!

I can carry everything that I need in my backpack, FD 50mm f1.4, FD 135mm f2.5, FD 28mm f2.8, Kit lens and my new Panasonic pancake 20mm f1.7.
A Few ND cokin P series filters, FD Adapter, Zoom H2 recorder... etc. Thats about it...

  • Dennis Alvernaz 1 month ago
    Roland,

When you are using the Canon FD lenses, I assume the GF1 does not work on auto or give you settings info. If that is true, how do you figure out the ISO, F Stop, shutter speed, etc?

    Dennis
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 month ago
With the FD lenses, you need to ajust the focus and F-Stop manually, In Movie Mode you can have full control by adjusting the ISO and Shutter Speed manually.

    You can find useful informations at this online community for filmmaking;

    Roland,

So gracious of you to answer my elemental questions along with references! I feel like I am getting years of experience in a few minutes! I misread the monopod specs so understand how easy it is to tote. I am retired and considering doing something serious with photography, counting the costs (not a problem) and considering the learning curve (more of a problem!). I'm retired.

I'm amazed how beautiful your work is and how you have developed a work flow as minimal as possible while maintaining the highest of quality.
The work of an artist caring for his art!

I am reading the gh1 manual daily, considering what I would enjoy shooting, looking into Mac NLE possibilities, neo scene, cinema tools, etc. and also considering what content I would like to capture, lacking beautiful grandchildren, pets, or weddings to shoot! Grandparents take the most loving of videos of the grandchildren, I have noted.

Going to public events seems to provide the "cover" necessary for the "don't take my picture" phobia! You are especially good at catching the human moments in your videos!

You seem to be concentrating now on using your FD lenses rather than the kit lens, I assume because they are "faster". Do you ever get into hassles with people not wanting to be "on camera"?

Again, thanks for all the useful answers and leads! I hope others are profiting from my questions and your answers. The rubber hits the road in the particular not the general, and photography is nothing but particulars, it seems!

    Gratefully,

    Dennis
  • Roland Cadieux plus 27 days ago
    You're welcome Dennis,

Going to public event is always easier but sometimes, people doesn't want to be filmed... but there's a big advantage with a DSLR, they think you're taking their pictures while you video them :) I had a big Sony FX7 camcorder and believe me its easier with a little camera like the GH1.
  • Dennis Alvernaz 26 days ago
I was taking candids on a bus when asked by a rider "Who was I sending the pictures to?". The rider also said I should ask everyone before I take their picture!
  •
  • Dennis Alvernaz 30 days ago
    Roland,

    Still more technique questions!

    1. Using the FD lenses, do you usually focus through finder or LCD?
    2. Which of your 3 FD lenses gets used most, least?
    3. Does distance from objects you decide to frame determine lens choice or some other variable?
    4. Do you relatively frequently change lenses or only rarely?

I wish someone took as good a movie of you making movies when you are making them, start to end. That would avoid all the questions of how you do what you do so well!! What a tutorial that would be, particularly if you added a voice commentary to the footage! OTOH that would be like finding out how the magician does the trick!

BTW, your delicate use of slowed motion really draws the viewer into the video. Seems to me you are using it more than in the obvious cases, right?

I feel like I'm asking Picasso how he paints!!!!!!! Hard to ask the right questions!

    Dennis
  • Roland Cadieux plus 27 days ago
Inside I like to use the LCD but outside I prefer the viewfinder, specially on sunny days.
The 50mm f1.4 is the one that get used most.
Most of the time distance determine my choice of lenses, but if I can move forward or backward without obstacles, I can keep a specific lens for several clips.

Thank you Dennis for your comments; It’s gratifying to know when someone has enjoyed what I've done.
  •
  • Dennis Alvernaz 26 days ago
It appears to me that the kit lens produces a "softer" picture.
