I'm in CA and ordered one from Harry's Photo up there in Canada. Supposedly they only had 5 in stock.
Merci!
just do a search with "Canon FD to Panasonic GH1"
Canon glass is fine and you could use other glass as well. 5DMrk2 is my Low light hero. Avialable light is a new art form.
I dont like the 1080p24 because of the "panning mud" ; dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=172958
I love the 720p60 and hope that panasonic will fix the codec with a firmware upgrade soon :) anyways, every new camera has issues.
Audio on 5D2 can be solved with a Beachtec 5D mixer or with seperate sound as in the old days by using a Tascam field recorder or a Zoom field recorder.
Film Format and Sensor Size Comparison
Hello all,
One of the most frequent questions I’m emailed about is sensor/film format sizes and 35mm depth of field. Actually what seems to happen more often than not, is that I’m informed that I should build a PL adapter for the Canon 5Dmk2, because it has “35mm depth of field, and the GH1 doesn’t.” This is incorrect. I’m going to repeat this….
THIS IS INCORRECT.
The Canon 5Dmk2 uses a 135 sized sensor which is a 35mm STILL-photo format, the closest equivalent on the motion picture side is VistaVision. This is not the format used predominantly for mainstream motion picture and television production.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 sensor, while smaller than the Canon 5Dmk2, is much closer to the field of view/depth of field used in mainstream film and television. Take a look at this chart I created. All sensors/film formats sizes listed are to scale.
One more thing- the 4/3″ format is not roughly equivalent to 16mm. One could say that 2/3″ HD and 16mm film are similar, but it’s not accurate to also include 4/3. 4/3 is FOUR TIMES the size of 2/3″ HD. (22mm hypotenuse vs 11mm hypotenuse). See the chart below for a visual representation.

as tu laissé tomber le d90 pour le pana? j'ai l'impression que la qualité en video de cet apn est fabuleuse ! mais vaut-il en photo d'apres toi?
merci !
GH1 better than D90
Thanks Mr Roland Cadieux
Merci pour tes images magnifiques, je guette le lumix
Great video can't wait to see more with it!
Nice film, Roland Cadieux! :)
Meme sur ce footage ci je vois un peu de 'mud' quand ta fille saute... qu'en dis tu?
Good work!
Dans mon cas le délais de livraison à été de 10 jours... Je dois maintenant me décider pour quelle option je vais opter concernant les filtres ND.... Hoya ou adapteur Cokin...

Great work.. I always come to vimeo to check out test videos of new DSLR's and always come across your videos.. Thanks for all the reviews/tests..
Anyway, does the GH1 have similar issues as the D90 when it comes to motion ("jello effect")?
Regards,
Christian
There's practically no "jello effect", you really have to move the camera very fast to make it happen.
Nice N I C E video!! any chance playing the GH1 with your DIY steadicam you used on the D90 night shots? :-). btw, did you grade the video here? Keep it coming Roland..Terima kasih from Brunei
Belle vid ...
Est-ce que je comprend bien qu'en adaptant ta 50mm Canon sur La Pana ça te donne en fait une 100mm (équivalent 35mm) ?
Merci,
Non, ca deviens 65mm.

Frankly your results are 90% your talent as a videographer/photographer, you simply possess a great eye and have the technical smarts to work around the limitations of the platform you use.I dont know what you do for a living but I do know what you should be doing
best regard to you and your photogenic family

I'm really close to replace my Canon HF10 with this camera since I want manual focus control and some DOF without having to zoom in fully.
I prefer the GH1 over the D90, the 5D is a jewel for low light, but for me the GH1 is perfect.
Here's all the spec for motion image;
Motion Jpeg [4:3] QVGA : 320 x 240, 30fps / VGA : 640 x 480, 30fps / Motion Jpeg [16:9] WVGA : 848 x 480, 30fps / Motion Jpeg [HD] 1280 x 720, 30fps / AVCHD NTSC [Full HD] 1920 x 1080, 60i (sensor output is 24fps)(FHD: 17Mbps) / AVCHD NTSC [HD] 1280 x 720, 60p (SH: 17Mbps, H: 13Mbps, L: 9Mbps) / AVCHD PAL [Full HD] 1920 x 1080, 50i (sensor output is 25fps)(FHD: 17Mbps) / AVCHD PAL [HD] 1280 x 720, 50p (SH: 17Mbps, H: 13Mbps, L: 9Mbps)
As an example, a clip of 20 seconds in 1080p24 is 38 MB.
I use a Manfrotto 560B, Panasonic Class 6, 4GB cards, I typically have one spare battery and one spare SDHC card with me.

and I used this Lowpro Flipside 300 to carry lens and accessories.

I hope I am not being a pest with these questions but as a prospective gh1 user, I wonder what you bring with you in your camera bag when you go out for a shoot. I don't mean to be tedious, but I wonder what you consider necessary and how you manage to pack it together for easy use.
Any comments would be appreciated!
Dennis
A Few ND cokin P series filters, FD Adapter, Zoom H2 recorder... etc. Thats about it...
When you are using the Canon FD lenses, I assume the GF1 does not work on auto or give you settings info. If that is true, how do you figure out the ISO, F Stop, shutter speed, etc?

So gracious of you to answer my elemental questions along with references! I feel like I am getting years of experience in a few minutes! I misread the monopod specs so understand how easy it is to tote. I am retired and considering doing something serious with photography, counting the costs (not a problem) and considering the learning curve (more of a problem!). I'm retired.
I'm amazed how beautiful your work is and how you have developed a work flow as minimal as possible while maintaining the highest of quality.
The work of an artist caring for his art!
I am reading the gh1 manual daily, considering what I would enjoy shooting, looking into Mac NLE possibilities, neo scene, cinema tools, etc. and also considering what content I would like to capture, lacking beautiful grandchildren, pets, or weddings to shoot! Grandparents take the most loving of videos of the grandchildren, I have noted.
Going to public events seems to provide the "cover" necessary for the "don't take my picture" phobia! You are especially good at catching the human moments in your videos!
You seem to be concentrating now on using your FD lenses rather than the kit lens, I assume because they are "faster". Do you ever get into hassles with people not wanting to be "on camera"?
Again, thanks for all the useful answers and leads! I hope others are profiting from my questions and your answers. The rubber hits the road in the particular not the general, and photography is nothing but particulars, it seems!
Gratefully,
Dennis
Going to public event is always easier but sometimes, people doesn't want to be filmed... but there's a big advantage with a DSLR, they think you're taking their pictures while you video them :) I had a big Sony FX7 camcorder and believe me its easier with a little camera like the GH1.
Still more technique questions!
1. Using the FD lenses, do you usually focus through finder or LCD?
2. Which of your 3 FD lenses gets used most, least?
3. Does distance from objects you decide to frame determine lens choice or some other variable?
4. Do you relatively frequently change lenses or only rarely?
I wish someone took as good a movie of you making movies when you are making them, start to end. That would avoid all the questions of how you do what you do so well!! What a tutorial that would be, particularly if you added a voice commentary to the footage! OTOH that would be like finding out how the magician does the trick!
BTW, your delicate use of slowed motion really draws the viewer into the video. Seems to me you are using it more than in the obvious cases, right?
I feel like I'm asking Picasso how he paints!!!!!!! Hard to ask the right questions!
Dennis
The 50mm f1.4 is the one that get used most.
Most of the time distance determine my choice of lenses, but if I can move forward or backward without obstacles, I can keep a specific lens for several clips.
Thank you Dennis for your comments; It’s gratifying to know when someone has enjoyed what I've done.
