1. iQ font - When driving becomes writing / Full making of

Two typographers ( Pierre & Damien / plmd.me ) and a pro race pilot (Stef van Campenhoudt) collaborated to design a font with a car.
The car movements were tracked using a custom software, designed by interactive artist Zachary Lieberman. ( openframeworks.cc )

@ which frame rate were you capturing the video ?
any plan to release this great " 4 colors tracking "piece of software ?

to try to answer, the video was captured at some form of HD (@wireless knows), but the tracking software was working on split of that footage that was 720x576 (pal) resolution.

I've thrown up the last version of the software, which should compile without problems in OF 0.06 here:

in the next few days I'll try to provide some more info about how it works.

yes we had an HD camera on the ceiling with a wide angle lens to cover as much ground as posibble.

and like Zach says, a pal signal (at 25 fps) was coming in the computer for realtime tracking.

generaly a font is just black. but maybe we can separate each color track into a different font - (so you could give one color to each) and after that overlap the 4...
but i don't know if it will be useful ;)

I’m almost sure that SVG-font spec will allow colored glyphs.

You should have used an electric car, would have made more sense. Now it's just messageless, or worse, a message that utterly sucks ass.

Edit: Not trying to be rude, it just irritates me when people spend so much energy (literally) and there doesn't seem to be any greater goal to it that to promote your designagency or whatever. I love the playfullness of you project, I really do, and the tech is cool as hell, I just wish you had wanted to add an environmental message to it when you first have choosen to use a car as your "brush".

thanks for the edit and the feedback -- you do make good points and I think you can't do anything car related without considering those questions. thanks for clarifying what you meant.

personally, I think there are other messages inherent in a project like this beyond the environmental message (which is important, don't get me wrong), like encouraging curiosity, showing people a different view of the world, showcasing an interesting collaboration, all things in my book that are reasonable goals.

plus (and I'm totally not in the advertising world, so don't take this part of my response the wrong way) it's showcasing a small car (that's fairly green, tbh), and showing a different view on it. I know it's not an electric car, but still, I think projects like this might have the potential to help people see different options in the marketplace.

like the clips that show you working in the font software, editing the lines. was the fontographer? or something else?

I have to agree with Morten Skogly. It was a great idea but somehow it seems like a bit of a waste. Deforesting a path would also make a cool font too....I know its a hyperbolic statement but I think it is appropriate for our times...
