doesn't this predict the type of person you will be when you're older? I think I heard a piece on this on This American Life or Radio Lab or something...
  • Janek Nahm 2 years ago
I thought it was about success?!

In this short talk from TED U, Joachim de Posada shares a landmark experiment on delayed gratification -- and how it can predict future success. With priceless video of kids trying their hardest not to eat the marshmallow.

The original experiment was conducted by Walter Mischel in the 60s.

He then followed the children's progress through adolescence - finding that who were able to wait without eating the marshmallow were better adjusted and 'more dependable', scored higher on SATs too.

Why do kids always have so difficult with this kind of stuff (waiting, temptation, etc.)? I know I was probably the same at that age, but still... I just read in a newspaper something about kids who have a "candy day", and when they are at a party and are offered sweets, they dart to the bowl and start suffing their mouths, not stopping until the bowl is empty.. (my interpretation was that if they alway have to wait on one day in the week when they get something good, and now when they get an "extra day", they make the most of it...) hmm.. I don't actually know what I wanted to say anymore. Became too philosophical/psycological for me... ;)
  •
  • Erik Sundius 2 years ago
But ok, yes, a fun video :)

No creo que sea un experimento curel, ellos solo estan pelando por un premio, pueden lograrlo o no.

Lo cruel sería no darles el premio por el cual lucharon (con esas graciosas caras).

    Nice Video ;)!

Great! I am filming the "opposite" at memoro.org/de..

Herrlich, die Mimik und Gestik plus die passende Musik!
  • Steve V 2 years ago
I'm curious, could you explain this? Are you going to post this soon?
  • Nikolai Schulz 2 years ago
memoro.org/de embedded in memoro.org is a non-profit-project to collect the personal memories and past traditions of people over 65 years. We are trying to build a kind of generation bridge, hoping that young people will film their grandparents, short clips of 5 minutes, and upload this!
    Greetings from Germany,
    Munich,
    Niko
  • Steve V 2 years ago
Are the grandparents eating marshmallows? ;)
  • Nikolai Schulz 2 years ago
No, the grandparents are dreaming of past times. Sometimes, they are really happy, that the past times are "past"...Sometimes, old people develop back in some parts to little children. See my head, no more hairs...teeth began to move...Circle of live.
3 weeks ago, I had been in New York City for a week, really a great place! Little bit loud, but nice and friendly people from a lot of differents nations, but some of them are not really slim.
You don't see this kind and number of overweight people in Europe. I am practicing for exemple Yoga every day, stopped smoking and drinking alcohol and I am feeling great since some years. Move you body, walk, no drive in or drive through.
Even the muffins are doublesize there :-), and the grey squirrels in the Riverside Park too. Here the squirrels are brown or dark orange, and shy and small ..ok, I am waiting for your next great clip, Steve.
And...we need PR for memoro.org/de and I am trying to learn some fundraising for our non-profit-organisation :-), hard work in Europe, because the people are used that the social state is responsible for everything.

So Steve V, you get to torture little kids for a living? You are living many parent's secret dream. I was waiting for one kid to immediately eat the marshmallow, knock on the door, and scream, "I'm too big to fail! I need a bailout marshmallow!"
  • Levi Figueira 2 years ago
    haha :D
  • Steve V 2 years ago
Haha. The little girl who ate it, finished and immediately went for the door to find her parents.
  • Weltenwanderer plus 2 years ago
yeah what great methaphor this would be!
and how true short term greed and then running to your parents to get what you could have gotten if you had a long run strategy.

Too simple task for us, adults, to wait for another marshmallow....
But try to figure out this marshmallow being a car or a house and if you wait a couple of years more you could get (buy) another one for free? Not so simple anymore, unh?
Any similarity with our "interest rates", "credit cards" and "financial markets" reality ??? Great Work!!!

Awesome example of a basic "delay of gratification methods" (at least that is what developmental psychologists would likely call this). Kids who wait -- later in life do great!
