On its third try, the Boston City Council passes a new plan for redistricting. The margin was a veto-proof 11-2, with "no" votes from Charles Yancey and Bill Linehan, the chair of the council's Committee on Redistricting. In a statement today, Councilor at Large Ayanna Pressley characterized the new map as a "giant step forward," explaining, "We prevented the cracking of district 2, protecting the voice of Asian-American and Latino voters in that district. We unpacked district 4 and created a strong opportunity for people of color in district 5. We worked hard to make Mattapan whole and successfully fought against the splitting of Jamaica Plain. " Councillor Charles Yancey argued there should be an opportunity for people of color to be elected in 5 of the 9 districts, since they account for 53% of the city's population. Report for BNN News. Aired October 31, 2012.
