32. Wings over the Heath

Prees Heath Common is the last sanctuary in the Midlands for the threatened Silver-studded Blue butterfly. The site covers 60 hectares (148 acres) and lies between the A49 and the A41, two miles south of Whitchurch in North Shropshire.
Butterfly Conservation is restoring the area to heathland and grassland for the benefit of both wildlife and visitors.

The site was purchased by Butterfly Conservation on 30th May 2006 and not on 30th May 2008 as stated in the video.

4Moorhens2 2 years ago John, I think the only way to be certain about whether the male butterfly is a silver-studded or common blue is if the black spots near the edges of the wings contain silver bluish-green flecks as can be seen in your video here at 00:38. If the black spots do not contain the flecks then one has to assume the butterfly to be a common blue male. Nigel.
