Kit lens 14-140mm with AFC (auto focus continuous) select.

I made this short clip to show how well (in my opinion) the continuous autofocus work with the kit lens.

There's no colors grading, the files are direct from the camera to the timeline (CS3 - 720p24).

720p60 - Motion picture mode, aperture around 5.6, 1/125 shutter speed, iso 100, AWB

Very beautiful footage Roland! Can't believe this is with the kit lens and that there isn't any CC in this footage.

Care to comment on yr workflow? Are these files just dropped onto the 720p24 timeline?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 6 months ago
Thanks mike, yes just dropped onto the 720p24 timeline... camera film mode was dynamic, contrast +1 and saturation +1.

It auto focuses pretty good doesn't it? Beautiful. When your kids grow up to become movie stars the'll have this beautiful footage in their resumes! Keep on shooting.

Great video. I have question: i read cameralab.com review saying that with the kit lens it's hard to get great shallow-of-depth (movie like) look. i think it's kinda true right? since comparing your other video (with non-kit lens), the DOF looks better.

Wow So glad with your tests Roland. It proves I made the right choice and get the boss (her) approval!
Hope to get mine this week.
Now hope someone will find out how to get audiometers on screen (like for 5d see Vimeo.com/5267475).
Pana didnt have it in update 1.1.
Did you also have a look at TimeLaps? Or do we have to order a seperate one like tinyurl.com/mfz42t
  • Roland Cadieux plus 6 months ago
Glad to hear it :) That will be great if someone find out how to get audiometers on screen like this guy does... very impressive.
I didn't have a look at Timelaps yet...

Awesome! That camera rocks! I cannot believe how good the picture quality is. The slow mo turned out really good too.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 6 months ago
Thanks Ashley, I agree, that camera is really impressive for the price... 720p60 give great slow motion.

Great stuff Roland. Just from the kit lens, no less! Are there prime lenses for the GH1 that will work for autofocus as well?

I guess I'm stuck with the D90 until Scarlet comes along...:-(
  • Roland Cadieux plus 6 months ago
Thanks Trin! There is no prime yet that work with the autofocus as of now... Scarlet... you must be a very patient man :)
  • Trin 6 months ago
No, just poor. It would take me that long to save up for one!

wow man, can i ask who you ordered the camera through? I've been trying to find it online and nobody has it in stock. It looks amazing!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 6 months ago
You can try Vistek canada... they had a few in stock last week.

The Nikon D90 does not have autofocus correct? Only manual which gives fluctuant exposure. Just bought the d90. Someone help, ha ha.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 4 months ago
Yes only manual focus but you can lock the fluctuant exposure by setting for AE-L (hold): Menu > Custom Settings (Pencil Icon) > f (controls) >> Assign AE-L/AF-L Button > Ae lock (hold) > Ok

so when you're happy with what you see in live view you push the button and the exposure is lock.

Hello! I've just bought a GH1 and I’m experiencing some problems with AF during video recording (movie creative mode). When the subject moves and the AF is set, the image wobbles. With manual focus everything is ok… Is it something wrong with my settings???
  • Roland Cadieux plus 4 months ago
Be sure to set it to AFC (auto focus continuous) With this method you don't have to touch anything and it will focus smothly (not every time) from one point ot another; you need to set AF mode to: 1-aera focusing, (position and size of the AF aera can be changed) next set the focus mode dial to AFC, whatever is in your white bracket will be in continuous focus while recording.

How far away from the nearest kid do you stand when filming the last part?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 4 months ago
If I remember well, around 5 feet and 50mm on the lens.

Wow beautiful Shots and I love the music! The ramping effects are a nice touch as well. I am curious what your editing on? Is it slow and clunky to work with the AVCHD codec?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 3 months ago
    Thanks Gabriel,

I work with Premier CS4, If you have a good computer its not slow or clunky at all.

Great shots! I have a hv30 with a letus mini, would you recommend your camera over mine? I'm going to start shooting a short film soon and I'm trying t get a sense on which would be more practical. Thanks!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 3 months ago
I had an FX7 with a 35mm adapter, I would never go back.

Very nice vid - just as a note, if you load the 720p60 footage into Cinema Tools you can set it to play at 30fps, using all the frames and making the slow motion parts of the shot much smoother. You can check how does it look like checking this vid:

Wonderful footage. Very nice. How did you get the slow motion effects? One question I have though: I'm not sure if it's my computer or caused by a compressed file or something, but the images feel kind of jumpy at points (though still very cool looking). Is this because of it being slowed down or some other reason?

wow that kit lens looks good!
  •
  • Richard 1 day ago
The kit lens does good job daytime but is horrible indoor and low light. The worst about evf that if lens suffer low ligth the evf suffer too make it hard to manual focus.
