Amazing Egypt !

The most magical place I have visited!!!
Highly recommend visiting Egypt, you wont be disappointed.

Sugoi :)

Video Camera: Canon HV20 (cinemode)
NLE: Edius Broadcast

.....................................................................................
Sorry it's a little long but I had to edited it down from 4 hours of footage to 11min.
No scene lasts longer than 3 or 4 seconds, so much to see and do there, this video will show you pretty much most of the main sites there...enjoy :)

Thanks to you Mikon, I could get some of the shots in this video as steady as if I was using a tripod because you introduced me to the 'POD'

    Egypt sure is breathtaking.

    Thanks again mate!!!

sugoi, your videos are always of the highest quality!

what encoder/video format is the final output? it looks good.
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
    Thanks Ted, appreciate your comment.

It was encoded into a wmv at 1280x720,
    CBR at 5,000kbps.
But I always make sure the footage on the timeline is very clean meaning both in movement and in graininess, this always helps the final outputted video look it's best.

    wow !!!
at 2:52 there is a bid that maked me realised how big everything is !!!

    a bird as a scale ;)

you should do a 2 minuts of the very best of with insane music... I think it worth the try ;)

nice work on this one !
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
I know what you mean, when you are there it's like these places were built for giants/gods.

You missed another 'Bird Scale' shot at 3:35 , the bird looks like a small fly on the giant statue because the statue is over 20 meters (65 feet) tall !!!!!

I'm busy editing the next stop that was on my trip Auschwitz, once that's done I might look into editing it down to 2 min for you :)

Thanks so much for your comment, I really appreciate it mate :)

You have such an eye for the shot. Each shot is precise. This is such a wonderful reminder of what our HV series cameras can do. I am motivated again to shoot.

Can you offer any suggestions/settings for your night shots? B/c in Cinemode, you can't control the aperture, correct? Wonderful video. Bravo, Sugoi.
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
Thanks for the compliment Hoop :)
Means a lot coming from you.

You are right about the 'cinemode' for night shots.
For night shots I set it to 'TV' mode and lower the shutter down, the lower you set it the more the video will strobe but for solid non moving temples in Egypt using a tripod it worked a treat :)

Thanks again my friend for your comment :)

  • Makoto Muroizumi 5 months ago
In this video, which is so beautiful that it did not bore me at all during 12 minutes, I had to notice again the unique "moist" texture that your recent videos; those shot with HV20, show.

Looks as if the light is diffused because of the moisture in the air, as it happens in Japan, especially in spring, but in Egypt, at any season, I guess that does not happen, so you must have created the texture.

I can imagine that one key is "cinema mode", with which you can avoid vivid contrast of light and shadow, but just with "cinema mode" you could not get this much "moist" texture.

Did you do it in Edius, then?
I find this mild light effect really nice.

When I saw your "Soothing Glimpses of Tokyo", I noticed the same texture, but as the air is naturally "moist" in Japan, it did not strike me as much as this video, shot in supposedly dry Egypt.
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
Thank you Makoto for your comment :)

Yes you are right about 'cinemode' in which you avoid vivid contrast of light and shadow. As I hate that 'video' look on the standard settings.

The 'moist' texture (as you call it) is done in Edius.
With a few filters all working together to provide that 'look'.

    Thanks again my friend :)

Great masterpeace Mikon! This really makes me think different about going there for the first time this life. Really good promo to attrack videographers (like me). Because its an open air (not moving) museum I dont like it for videography because the urge to move the camera. So looking for movingsubjects, and you did! Your first scenes are stunning and makes me dream of a camel walking past these monuments would be nice but hard to arrange I suppose and how about permissions? Is it OK to film everywhere? Always heared it was not allowed inside the pyramids.
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
Thank you Jan van der Meer ! (but I am not Mikon)

I am so happy that this video has made you think of going.
You can shoot everywhere outside easily but inside certain temples you can not. They are very strict about it if they say 'No Photos'. So be aware.
If you go please send me a link to your Egypt video :)

Amazing footage with this little camera. This is unbelievable quality and looks better than what I did with the AH1. What is the secret? Is it the camera, the cinemode (is this 24P?), the Edius software or your final compressing? People are speaking about GH1, d5 and RED and you are doing such a beautiful film with the little HV20! Hope to get some details and advice from you. I am working on Mac only though, so I probably cannot use all the software.
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
No, it's shot in 1080i (interlaced) then encoded to 'Progressive'
It comes down to two things - Cinemode & Filters during post in Edius (mainly the filters in Edius)
I've sent you a private message...

Might you know how to get this look in Final Cut
Pro with Magic Bullet? (that's a tall order isn't it?)
  • Sugoi 4 months ago
Hi Hoop, sorry mate even though I own FCP 6 on my Mac I don't use it as I prefer Edius. I can only give you the simple advice of playing with 'Magic Bullet' until you get the right look for your footage. Sorry I couldn't be any more help to you :(

Really great. I assume this is Cairo, Giza, Karnak, Aswan and maybe more Karnak.

What was the Coptic Christian fresco in the middle?

Really enjoyed the editing too especially the portion of the man standing in shadow and light. A painting captured in video--really special.

Howe longer were you in Egypt....you certainly go a lot out of it.

Looking forward to your next trip!
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
    Thanks heaps Chris :)
Wow you sure are observant, the Coptic Christian fresco was from a greek Church we visited after the Mosque so I just added that one quick scene for myself to remember that I went there too.
Yes the man standing in that beam of light is my favourite shot too, I totally agree it's like a painting captured in video. Thank you so much for your very kind words my friend :)

I was Egypt for 13 days, We saw more things but we not allowed to video record everything... a real shame.

I totally understand how a shorter video would be better for the internet...I edited this for my wife & I to remember what we experienced on our trip so 11min for us is very short. Maybe one day I will do a quick 3 min edit for vimeo.

So many spectacular shots, & one can never get enough of those images, but I would only cut some of the repetitive shots. What makes it feel lengthy is the music - it gets repetitive in the middle but the ending really makes up for it. Fantastic piece definitely a treasure of your travel -I wish my hand held was as smooth with the HV20 hehehe.
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
Thank you so very much Maria for your comment :)

    I appreciate your feedback.
It was meant to go for only 4min but I had soooooooo many great shots that I kept extending the video...sorry lol ;)

I was thinking of using two different tracks for the clip but in the end stuck with only one... I understand how that can drag for 11min for some people.

    Thanks again my friend :)

Great work, Sugoi! You must have so much fun traveling with your HV20. Wonderful composition and precise editing. I like the jump cuts that were sync'ed with the sound track.

I noticed some of the statues' faces were obliterated. I guess if you don't have a blur Fx in your arsenal, you can smooth chisel the stone face.

This is brilliant - good job with the editing, and thanks for sharing. Some amazing shots in there, those high contrast shots work well with the sun peircing through into the buildings.

I hope to be visiting there soon... did any guards mind you using a tripod?
  • Sugoi 5 months ago
Thanks a lot for your kind words Johnny ;)
I just loved the 'Temple of Edfu' with the sunlight shining through, looked even more impressive in real-life! You'll love it when you go (but you do need to be there when the sun is at just the right angle)

Egypt is just so strange with tripods, cameras, video etc...
Some places didn't care other sites you couldn't take any photos/video, other places made you pay to take a tripod, others didn't care etc.. strange.

I highly recommend you buy a 'POD' thepod.ca/
I used that when tripods were not allowed or I just couldn't use mine due to the massive crowds in the temples. Sometimes it was better to just use the 'pod' to get angles that the tripod would of taken too long to get right.

Please send me a link to your video once you upload it.
  • Johnny Wishbone plus 5 months ago
Thanks for the info about tripods, and the link to the POD site. Will check it out. :-)
