Terrarium is an interactive, sonic ecosystem whose source of energy comes from the sounds people make interacting with the work. The sounds of the participants voices come into the world via the sound vents. These sounds are too raw for the environment so they are sucked in by the Seed Spitters who process the sounds to more manageable particles which are then expelled into the environment. These processed sound particles help spawn and sustain life within the ecosystem, providing food for the fish in the water and creating frequency sensitive plants on the land. The voice also triggers changes to the Pattern Bush who adapts the shapes of its leaves to the sounds it hears.

Theo this is my favorite piece you have ever done. It's great, so beautiful. It reminds me of Fern Gully but more magical. Nice work Emily and Theo.

    wow thanks! I didn't realize :)

we have a lot of ideas for a 2.0 version - it was a lot more work than we initially thought so we didn't get everything we wanted in.

    hey carolina!
terrarium is not up any more unfortunately but Funky Forest is at the Moomah Cafe ( moomah.com/exhibitions/ ). Its on Hudson st.

As it is mainly for kids the best thing would be to talk with Kimberly or Tracy and arrange a time for your ITP crew to come by and check it out. But it is there all the time so if you are nearby you should just pop in.

Super fun, totally surreal. I like that the aesthetic is so tight and consistent. It'd be awesome to have a gigantic maze/labyrinth constructed that has different versions of this projected in different hidden spaces... it'd be like walking through a forest, discovering niches (rather than walking in front of one).

    hey thanks!
actually the original idea was that the world was viewable from all these different portals spread around the space. so you got glimpses into these different areas.

I think we will still try that, maybe for the next version.
