Nigeria: Malaria Control Project
With Africa’s largest population - estimated at 150 million - Nigeria bears a greater malaria burden than any other country in the world. In May 2009, Nigeria launched a massive bed net distribution campaign in the state of Kano as the first wave of a larger national campaign to cover each of Nigeria’s 36 states over the next two years with 60 million long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets. By covering everyone at risk of malaria with a bed net and other key malaria control interventions, the Government of Nigeria aims to halve the number of malaria deaths in the country by the end of 2010.
This documentary shows the bed net distribution process in Kano, focusing on some of the challenges the local communities had to overcome in order to distribute more than 2 million bed nets in 4 days. At the end of the campaign, a rapid assessment was done to determine whether people in the household slept under a bed net.
