    I've been trying to reproduce this effect - just for fun - and for the life of me I can't figure out how those spindly tentacles were animated. SO FRUSTRATING. I need a better brain.

    I don't know what software you are using but if you are into Cinema4D you can use a plug-in called 'Hair'. It's part of the studio bundle and easy to animate.

    Alan, i have no idea how sehsucht did theirs, but a good place to start is hair. You could extend Maya hair to perform similar to this, Houdini could accomplish this similarly with animating cv curves (or hair). i believe XSI has a whole section of ICE for doing stuff like this, digital tutors just released a DVD on it

    you can do strands in After Effects with particular, but all they can do is get turbulent, that's it.
