On June 23, 2012, Nina Hagen and her team at El Dorado Farms grafted a two month old foal to Star, one of the nurse mares at the farm. The foal's mother had died and needed a nurse mare to not only ensure that it received proper nutrition, but also so that it would have a mare to continue teaching it how to grow up as a horse. This informative video takes you through the process step by step.

Advances in veterinary medicine make it possible to bring a nurse mare into milk without having to breed her and produce a foal of her own. With this method, the orphan foal who is brought to her becomes her own more readily.
