Luring to "sit" and "down" is usually easy! Notice that Nate has his foot on the leash so the puppy can't jump. This puppy had a bad habit at jumping up, and jumping at the lure so simply keeping your foot on the leash prevents the jump. Maggie has been practicing this for a week now so she is pretty good at this. Once your puppy is easily lured to the position, while you are feeding with your one hand, PET your dog with your free hand. The petting should be slow, pet down the back and not on the head between the ears. Petting matters believe it or not! Fast pets on the head can bring on play drive in a dog and in a young puppy can make them mouthy, best to pet low and slow. You want the puppy/dog to connect that praise, pet and food are all good!
