The year is 51 PD (Post Disaster).

Thanks to having been changed by genetic engineering, mankind is on a fast recovery from the devastation.
But what are the consequences of the change?

This film is a re-make of Kate Lee's classic 'The Movies' film 'The Afflicted', which was first released in february 2006, and was the runner-up at the Bitfilm festival that year. I am very happy that she allowed me to re-envision it for the Industry 101 competition, staged by Jase and A_N_D.

The original movie still is one of my favourite stories told in machinima (and not only in machinima), the story exploring what makes us human; and it has been, and still is, a huge inspiration to me.
I hope I have done it justice.

    Ah, what can I say?
I know this was a tough production for you, but it was definitely worth it.
    Sublime. Simply sublime.
A couple of things that caught my eye:
The use of colour was glorious – the washed out (dare I say bleached?) interiors contrasting with the vividness of the desk, the painting and, particularly, Palia's wardrobe. Stunning
The shot through the figurine's arm.
The lighting during the Byron excerpt.

A wonderful re-make of a wonderful story; and a lovely tribute to Kate.

OK, I'll stop dribbling now :)

Great work again, sisch. The worst part about it is that it ends. It goes by so fast. Great job.

I haven't seen the original (something I'll be doing very soon), but this is a very well done film. The script and performances are excellent. The production style supports the story/theme beautifully. I really love the soundtrack; moody and slightly futuristic. Such a pleasure to watch a film that involves you with it's story. Just the right touch as a director, Sisch.

The render here is pretty dark in the second half of the film. You can't see the doctors face at times which is something you probably didn't want. Such a head scratcher trying to encode the film and then figure out how to encode for Vimeo. Don't envy you the task.

    Really fine work, Sisch.

We’ve reached a stage where we expect a lot from your productions Sisch, and it never ceases to amaze me how you continue to set new standards for what is possible with “serious” machinima. Realising that I was probably in for a treat I downloaded this movie in its entirety to ensure I had an uninterupted view – and I’m glad I did!
I’m afraid these comments may sound sychophantic, but you leave me no choice… The Afflicted is sublime in its execution. Firstly, I loved the cold clinical feel of the movie. It is a sterile future we see here, a world where problems have been resolved, but at the cost of human warmth. Your use of colour compounds this effect; we’re left watching the ghosts of humankind. This orderly, organised, and entirely unwelcoming future is accompanied by a haunting musical score – the piano carries a message of sadness which is entirely fitting for the movie.
It’s a great story, and although I haven’t seen the original version I guess all credit must be given to Kate Lee for her vision.
There’s something rather interesting that you achieved here too Sisch; the sequence we see while Terbing is reading the poetry looks almost like live motion. This seems to be due to the superb post-production techniques you use. Certainly, this is the most life-like machinima I’ve seen in a long time. And speaking of post-production, the soft white glow that pervades ties in very well with the concept of “bleaching”.
In short this is a chilling, and highly polished production, bordering on professional, and this should serve as encouragement for Moviestorm users wanting to up their game – look and learn folks!

I'm still fairly new to machinima. I've been making movies for the past 18 months, so every so often I will come across movies or directors I like, and it is always a pleasure and learning experience when this happens. I'd never heard of you Sisch or seen any of your movies until very recently and what an eye opening experience it has been. This movie in particular really stands out. It must have taken a great deal of effort and patience to get this as flawless as it is, and I have to admit I'm in awe. As IceAxe says, this movie is an example to us all and I for one am certainly looking, and hoping to learn. Many thanks for sharing this.
