Ali Bomaye!

Ali Bomaye!

Daesun Hwang

This is the story of the Rumble in the Jungle, the monumental heavyweight showdown between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman on October 30, 1974 in what was then Zaire. "Ali bomaye!" was a popular audience chant, encouraged by Ali, that means "Ali, kill him!" In the midst of a comeback after being stripped of his belt, The Greatest found himself on a collision course with the formidable Foreman. Big George, who had already dominated Joe Frazier and Ken Norton (the only two who had beaten Ali), was the prohibitive favorite, and many predicted doom for the older fighter.

The footage is from When We Were Kings (Gast 1996), an Academy Award winning documentary about the matchup. The music is by Basil Poledouris, from his incredible score for RoboCop (1987). Both films are excellent, and you should immediately watch them if you haven't already. Or again if you have.
