1. Synesthesia
syn·es·the·sia syn·aes·the·sia (sĭn'ĭs-thē'zhə)

n.

A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.

A sensation felt in one part of the body as a result of stimulus applied to another, as in referred pain.

The description of one kind of sense impression by using words that normally describe another.

This was great! I liked how the part at 1:07 he's saying "green" in Cantonese and "blue" pops up on the screen, "purple" when "green" pops up, etc. It added another layer for me.

This is one of the most incredible shorts I have ever seen. The rushing climax is almost overpowering. I would pay to see this on a big screen with a serious sound system.

Wow. I think I'm going to go away and ponder in awe.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

Holy shit dude. Really amazing. Reminded me of a Crewdson photograph mashed up with Fischerspooner and some sort of psychedelic drugs, but also full of restraint in a weird way and with great, formal compositions. Awesome.

Thoroughly Enjoyable, especially the climax. However, i'm not sure what the boy was doing with the records and what happened at 2:52
  • Rivaldo Does 2 years ago
This is just my reading but clearly the boy was sniffing the records and transfering his synesthetic impressions to tape.

As for 2:52, I saw that as a severe case of speaker (headphone's transducer) feedback. The boy created such an intense feedback loop, he blew his own system.

That's really interesting. I'm a synaesthetic myself, which means the sensory receptors in my brain are cross-wired so that I feel sounds, smell tastes and hear sensations etc. Many people experience this to some minor degree (you feel that Wednesdays are purple, for example) but I'm a medically-certified sufferer. It was most extreme when I was a kid, and it allowed me more than a few secret pleasures. Listening to ABC's "The Look of Love" generated a powerful sensation of chocolate in my mouth, while eating actual chocolate altered my vision in much the same way as LSD. If I ran my hand over the cat, I'd hear birdsong. It was fun experimenting. The best experience of those times was my brief relationship with Deborah de Angelo. The phonetics of her name brought whisky to my tongue; her blonde hair made me hear cellos; her green cardigan caused a raging boner, and the sensation of her busy mouth upon my swollen helmet made me taste a full English breakfast. Those day are over. With medication, my only pleasure these days is retiring to bed with a cowbell, mint humbugs and Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" - all of which in combination, conspire to bring about the sensation of a hamster up my anus
