Middle Schools in School District 622 are implementing Balanced Literacy this year, a way of teaching language arts that helps students become more engaged readers. During class time, students spend time in a focused lesson and then practice what they've learned through independent reading time with a book of their own choosing. Allowing students to read at a more rigorous pace and at their own level is increasing the number of books students are reading and encouraging them to become lifelong readers.
