  • Good work Roland...the contrast is a little too hard isn´t it?

Thanks Augusto, I may have crush the black a bit to much, I will need a few ND filters, specially if I want to keep low shutter speed during sunny days.
  • I think you could get a matte box if you can...Genus has great matte boxes..and affordable.

Augusto, after all, what do you prefer in quality terms, 5d gh1, i know 24p.. but, leaving this, what do you think? or 7d ?
  • I prefer GH1...The sharpness on the Canon makes it look more like video...I prefer the filmic look. Not to mention the technical problems with the canons because I´ll save you the reading of the technical issues... :-))
For starters I bet nobody will actually be able to distinguish between 24 and 25fps

I ordered mine on May 7th and today (June, 25) Amazon STILL does not have it in stock. I may never get it, at this rate.

Great stuff man. Where did you buy it? I can't find it anywhere online. Thanks!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
Thanks vanawesome! I bought it from Vistek.com here in Canada.
  • vanawesome plus 5 months ago
Shoot, it's about 300 bucks more expensive if I buy from vistek than the place I currently have it on preorder.... Dilemma! Is spending 300 bucks worth not having to wait 20 more days?!?! I'm gonna have to do some soul searching over this one for a while. Thanks again!

    Hi Roland,

I`m from Brazil and I think to buy a GH1. So, how do you use Canon lens in that camera?

    Tks,
    João
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
You have to buy an adapter like this one:

    cgi.ebay.ca/Canon-FD-to-Panasonic-G1-GH1-OLYMPUS-E-P1-adapter_W0QQitemZ250449868774QQcmdZViewItem QQptZLens_Accessories?hash=item3a4ff9b7e6&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1215|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Why are you shooting in 720p60 and converting it to 720p24 instead of just shooting 1080p24?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
As of now the 1080p24 as to much "mud" maybe that will be fix in a future firmware update... who knows, you can't do fast panning movement with it, you can see an example there: vimeo.com/5062764 I will do some work in 1080p24 but for now I only shot in 720p60.
  • TheBrigadier 3 months ago
The “mud” is a fact of 24p mixed with the AVC codec. When motion blur occurs from something moving faster than the sensor can capture it, the compression algorithm see this as an opportunity to really compress the hell out of the image because it lacks any high contrast details that it's designed to maintain. So any blur just get amplified, ironically causing a greater contrast between crisp detail and motion blurred pixels.

This camera is funky. Sometimes it looks like an ordinary video camera and sometimes it's so film camera like.

I suspect it's blown out highlights, the deep dof with kit lens and the way one handle the camera that gives it away.

Did you use any ND-filters? It can be hard to get the harsh sunlight under control.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 5 months ago
Yes its hard... I just ordered a few ND filters today.
  • Mark Hensley 5 months ago
    Hi Guys,

I have been looking at the varible ND filter from Singh_Ray: singh-ray.com/varinduo.html

What are your thoughts on using a varible ND?

    salut roland,

Nice shots, nice camera... What about DOF? As i see, not too shallow
  • Roland Cadieux plus 4 months ago
    Thanks Power!

This clip was shot with the kit lens with a maximum F-Stop of 4.0, with prime lens like 50mm f1.4 you'll get better shallow depth of field like in my first test with the GH1 vimeo.com/5226497

Its not a full frame camera like the 5dm2 but for the price its not bad.

You say it can shoot 1080p, but in truth it's shooting 1080i - correct? It uses that awful pull-down to create the 24"p" look. I'm used to my HVX200, shooting 720p 24PN through my LetusEx 35 adapter. That's true progressive shooting at 24fps. The HVX200 also shoots 1080 at 24p, but using the same pull-down through 1080i video that the GH1 uses.
